It's actually called "kosmische musik" and it was born out of krautrock when German bands of that era slowly started abandoning traditional rock instruments and started employing synths and focusing on cosmic themes. It's really stretching it tho. These sounds are far from trance except for the use of arpeggios.

not too sure about earlier stuff. i haven't heard much from the 70s and before except the academic electronic music.
