Trance just isn't as large in North America because North America doesn't have the large radio stations playing all dance, all the time, and not to mention the super clubs.
You can bet that if one of the mega corps decided to push Trance, that it'd take hold. The pop culture in North America sadly seems to be dictated by the whims of the marketing boys more than anything.
I'm not saying Trance commercialization is necessarily good, but it's not the devil that a lot of people seem to imply that it is either. I think growing the Trance community is nearly always a positive thing. More people into the music means more people making their own music, and more talented people making new tunes for all of us to enjoy.
I think Trance is strong enough to survive being a commercial commodity...as most genres are. On the commercial level you'll have your casual fans who only buy what the radio stations and superstar DJ's play, but on the second level you'll always have the sub-community, which actively digs for new stuff, and advances the whole scene.
I'll put it this way, Trance has been a commercial thing in Europe for how many years now? And what's the end result? The same as you'd expect when *any* underground scene hits the airwaves.
You have some diehards bitching because the scene isn't as exclusive anymore, and hence jump on the next underground bandwagon.
You have the casuals who jump onto the Trance is cool because it's on the radio bandwagon, some of whom eventually dig deeper, and get into the larger pool of music.
And finally you have the people who've been part of the scene and don't really care. Some of the new stuff on the airwaves isn't to their liking, but some of it is. They accept the casual fans ignorance in trade for the mega events that are attracted, and continue to dig for new stuff in advance of the radio stations.
Substitute *any* music that's become popular in the past 20 years and you'll see pretty much the same pattern. As a member of camp #3, I would have zero problem with Trance being pushed into the spotlight...I don't know about you guys, but I'd much rather hear Cosmic Gate and Alice Deejay pounded repeatedly than Eminem and N'Synch...
