Studio Question

So, I have one pc running windows 7 which outputs sound through an m-audio 1010lt and a macbook pro which is using an apogee duet. I'm looking for a way to run both the sound outputs to one location than from there to my yamaha studio monitors. Since apogee doesn't support windows, moving a firewire cable less than a foot from my laptop to the top of my pc is out of the question. Would a patch-bay solve this dilema? Seems like a lot for something so simple, as I have no other hardware at the moment, or is there a more simple alternative?

Sorry if theres is a simple anser to this question im just starting out

Thanks

Need a mixer then. pretty obvious isn't it??

I think there might be a couple of other options, something like the mackie big knob or something might have an option for switching inputs. Or maybe they only switch outputs. I really don't know about that, but it'll probably cost about the same as a mixer in the long run anyway.

There's better options than the big knob and at a lower price too!

SM PRO AUDIO M-PATCH 2. You can only use one balanced input and a unbalanced input though.

weird.. i wonder why they would choose to go that route? I guess its more for monitor selection than input. would it make much difference if the signal is travelling less than a ft?

Storyteller actualler means the iNano, the M-Patch 2 is more fucntions and more expensive. The iNano its just a volume knob and nothing else. if u want more inputs etc they have the thing called SM Pro Audio M-Patch 2 with also a headphone amp. dual stereo outputs, separate volums, three inputs etc. It is powered though and I sort of doubt it is as transparent as the iNano, but probably ALOT better than big knob and alot cheaper than Central Station. You could consider a normal dj mixer for this too. I use Xone32 sometimes for monitor and input control.

edit: it seems SM Pro Audio is updating there catalog, id wait a little and see what they come up with. They are known for great sound (transparency) and solid build. But somewhat awkward operation (a little unlogic), which hopefully will be better in new lines.

The m-patch is only powered for the headphone output :-). But iNano is great too!

the iNano is only 70$ too so its a good device for the money if u only have one source and one pair of monitors. i use it from time to time (usually i just adjust the volume in the soundcard digitally from computer).

^^^ Its really an issue of how clean the device is going to be. The iNano is passive so shouldn't colour the sound as much, while most other solutions are going to be active AFAIK. If you're going active, then you can't really afford to get something cheap, since it'll give you bad colouration. Of course, how important that is when your using yamaha speakers is a bit questionable as well I guess.

Have a scoot around through the devices mentioned here and see if you can find something that would suit, but don't completely write off the idea of getting a second hand soundcraft or ecler mixer and using that. You might find it more useful for other things too, a mixer is a useful thing to have around often.
