Hello! Focusrite VRM Box - Headphone Reference Monitoring

Now, this looks interesting - I'm surprised it didn't get more attention from NAMM. Yeah, I know...we shouldn't mix on headphones, blah, blah, blah....but it's still an evil necessity for many of us sometimes. And the price is nice ($99 pre-order at audiomidi.com).

I haven't seen it in any, but then again, I'm pretty happy with my soundcard so I haven't really been paying too much attention to the newer ones.

That said, one of the reasons that this looks appealing to me is because I'm actually thinking about buying a dedicated headphone amp for mixing. The one feature on my 828mkII that I'm not loving is its headphone output. I'm not sure if mine is defective or went bad somewhere along the way, but the headphone output is very low compared to the Behringer headphone amp that we use for tracking. I'd use that for mixing as well, but it's a *little* (and I do mean only slightly) noisy and, more importantly, colors the sound. So, I'm definitely considering this one when I get around to buying a new headphone amp.

Looks like a good cheap portable headphone amp. :P

There's certain genres I can stand to listen to on the HD650's more than others. Anything without a lot of verb(read: trance) sounds like a mouthful of crackers.

I listened to the demo and it doesn't sound completely authentic, but it seems like it would help a lot.

I am seriously considering getting one of these. If it works as promised, it would be a godsend.
The first thing I want to know is price. I found it here for $99.

That's a nice price. I was expecting it to be way more. Been a while since I've found any hardware that I really needed. I'm starting to think that more producers mix with headphones than I realized. If any of you buy one of these, let us know you think.

I don't want to be a naysayer especially as I haven't used it, but I think unless you have no other option (i.e. no monitors) I just can't see this being a good idea.

No amount of realtime effects (delay, reverb, eq etc) is ever going to be a valid substitute for real monitoring.

I kind of see it like those room compensation systems - they are a band aid, not a cure.

I also think that it's not that difficult to teach yourself how to mix to an adequate level on headphones, baring in mind you'll need to do a final check on monitors.

As for the box itself, it's probably fine but I can't believe the DAC is going to be pristine. Nearly every decent soundcard has a headphone out and I just don't see this as being much better that the motu out.

I also can't understand why they have modeled speakers such as the entry level KRK's - I can only think for commercial reasons which generally isn't a good sign.

Reminds me somewhat of Redline Monitor from 112db. Interesting nonetheless.
