Waves Announces Permanent Price Reductions

Either hell froze over, or pirating and the bad economy has taken its toll on their sales:

Waves Price Reductions

why would piracy take a toll on their sales? Piracy increases sales. People who pirate would not have paid the prices they ask for in the first place. For a product in that price range, the only people who buy it are people who would have bought it regardless of piracy, so the people who pirate aren't exactly affecting sales negatively, they are affecting positively by being the marketers of the product. I'd say 50-70% of their sales are because of piracy, at the very least the ongoing of their business has been because of piracy, and the free marketing it has brought.

their product was overpriced, and UAD and other bundle makers became bigger competitors. Lower prices due to competition and overpriced product I imagine.

I'm willing to bet piracy had nothing to do with it, either way this is pretty cool news. Thanks for sharing

I was half-joking about the reasons for the price reductions, guys, since none of us really know all the reasons factoring into this decision, but obviously competition has a lot to do with it. It's just that Waves is the poster child for pirated software. I guess I should've added some of these:

their products have always been priced similarly if not cheaper than UAD plugins. It is the big packages that come with like 200 plugins that seems expensive but per plugin, it is quite reasonable. And of course it is piracy that is causing them to capitulate. And now that it is both cracked for pc and mac, they have no choice.

If you think its piracy that made them lower their prices, go ahead and make a reasonable/logical case as to why piracy made them lower their prices. So that I can break it to pieces for you...with ease.

Exactly. The mac crack coming out has a big deal to do with this I think.

Maybe not so much with the smaller ones but the Mercury, Horizon and Diamond for sure. Don't forget the Mercury bundle is over $6k before tax.

You also have to factor in that a lot of people who may have bought the smaller packages or individual plugs could get the big ones for free now.

Don't get me wrong, I think some of the piracy has helped them as a introduction to their software but I think the reduction of costs is directly linked to the mac version finally being cracked.

It may also be a move to cash in on new project studios based around native PTHD systems - by lowering their pricing they are making themselves a viable option for lower budget studios.

the pc version was just cracked a week ago or so. I know the mac one was out this summer because I used it myself. Just a poll on here, on who has ever bought a waves product despite being the same price and quality of UAD. Guarantee it is 0. So all the semi pro producers that will buy something they have to will now use the crack. That is a big market, Basically the UAD market is now not going to pay.

And the plugins really are not that expensive if you want a particular one. I bought their pultec remake and the API 2500 and they really aren't that expensive. Go to the website.

Anyways in my travels thru Ireland, England and Europe, i've been to 3 rather big studios 500 000 + in construction and equipment and 1 of them was using cracks. Rather scary.

lol k the maserati plugins are funny but still, they have some great plugins that aren't so insulting to the intelligence. Honestly they rival the UAD and you don't have to put up with that stupid dongle that cripples the use.

In fact I think the problem with Waves is that there are so many that having the cracks did help me decide which ones I would actually use but then again, everything I do is always redone by a real engineer so I wouldn't say i'm an engineer in any way.

M4B...no reasoning...no logic...nothing? Piracy does'nt cause lower prices as a response to piracy. Its one of the last things piracy would cause, especially for a product that is priced at 6k. If anything they would raise prices to make higher margins. Its either people can afford it and will buy it, or they cant afford it and wont buy it, so its pirated, and then marketed to those who will buy it. So for Waves, I imagine half of their revenues are a product of the piracy of their product.

ps: Waves plugins have been cracked for years, so why would they lower prices because of being cracked recently? So piracy has nothing to do with the lower prices. Its either competition or them realizing the product was overpriced. If anything, piracy allowed them to keep their high prices for as long as they did.
