Pro Tools 9

Anybody here using it? No, I'm not looking for a DAW change, but I keep reading about PT9 now that it's gone native and I'm just curious to know how it's working out with people's soundcards. Also, I had an MBox2 a few years ago with PTLE (version 6 IIRC) and the MIDI implementation was pretty lame. Has PT9 improved much in that area?

Yo,

As far as i am aware the Midi implimentation is much much better than PT6 BUT still lags far behind the likes of Cubase but cant vouch for this as i havent used PT9 i am only going by what i have read on multiple forums.

And i am sure there will be loads of people "using" it as soon as its available on the WAREZ sites :O so your soundcard tests should be done for you then

Mark

Marks right, there's going to be a lot of reviews from "new" users soon. That's if they get around the new pace 9 protection which would be no small feat.

We haven't switched over to PT9 yet (I seriously doubt many commercial studios have yet due to the usual 6 month/1year quarantine bug fix preiod), but I can tell you midi, while *slightly* better with midi implementation, is still so far behind logic and cubase that's it's not really a viable option for EDM production.

TBH, I'm really not impressed with the 9.0 update. It's mostly technical settings (useful in some situations like finally multiple panning laws and automatic delay compensation etc) and a mild aesthetic interface upgrade, but apart from that there was nothing groundbreaking like elastic time or beat detective as with the previous major step versions.

I don't actually think that protools will ever compete with logic or cubase in terms of midi - they have no interest. It's really offered as an add on included function, not like a foundational part of the program like with Logic or Cubase.

Thanks for the input, guys. I guess I'll be finding out more for myself as I'll be downloading PT9 this evening (yes, legally). I found a killer deal on PTLE8 and bought the upgrade to PT9 yesterday. No, I'm not changing hosts entirely, but Sonar X1 has some serious bugs to work out before it will be usable full-time and I just sorta wanted a change of scenery, particularly for audio editing and mixing, which I really liked to do in PTLE when I had it. And, I really want Beat Detective. I hated tracking with PTLE when I had it due to the crappy sound of the MBox, but I'll definitely be trying it with my SSL Alpha Channel/828mkII.

I may actually give it a shot for MIDI as well since most of what I'm working on now is equal parts audio (e.g., vocals, guitars, bass, live percussion) and MIDI, but isn't requiring a lot of detailed MIDI work (less EDM, more organic and pop-ish). That said, I've been watching the PT MIDI videos on groove3.com and, either they've made huge improvements in that department, or it was much better implemented than I recall from PTLE6.

Hey RANN (or anybody else who uses PT) - have you used the FXpansion RTAS/VST wrapper? Any thoughts? Over the years, I've read in some places that it can be a CPU hog and maybe even have some stability/timing issues, but those generally referred to v1 as I recall??? I have RTAS for most of my plugins, but there a few (e.g., Camel Audio products) that are VST only.
