To make the sub come thru even on crappy consumer pc speakers you need to push the sub through some sorta tube emmulation such as the free Voxengo tube.
Play around a lot (like dozens of hours) with nthe controls and you will gradualy get the right tone.
I also find the BBE sonic maximiser good for this, but it's £99 I think.
A distortion send (often using more than one distortion product) can also be useful.
Roll off plenty of unwanted freq above and below the core freqs you want audible.
Some argue the proper sub portion should only contain one sub oscilator to keep it clean but I bet some people use more, but beware of unwanted artifacts if you do use more than one sub.
I would tend to layer a sub with a higher freq sound too, just to bring it through.
I also prefer these 'cleaner' bases as opposed to fully in yer face rollers, which for me get fatiguing on the ear after a while.
