this might be a noob question but would someone be able to suggest on how I can extract a vocal sample from a track?

as in just the acapella?

There are programs for it, they all basically cost money except for one I came across that wasn't very good. Besides that the easiest (although not always the best) way is to have the track, and an instrumental of the exact same track- sounds, quality, everything (for best results and they must be stereo), then you just invert the instrumental and layer it exactly over the original and everything but the vocals should cancel out due to some jazz about phasing that I don't really care to understand.

In short there isnt anything out there that will give decent results

Like he said that way would be best, other than that there are tools to give you some results but you wont get anything close to decent like an acapella. Its not worth the hassle, been there before, but always worth a go depending on how much of the vocal your prepared to work with once you are finished.

Come to think of it my signature pretty much sums it up lol

you can invert the audio with something as simple as Audacity (Which is free) but be aware that the instrumental and the vocal version must be really really similar, if the instrumental is a bit longer it's still possible if you layer the parts that are identical but even if they're the same you get some residual noise in the form of hi hats

thank you for replies. i tried doing the inverting the audio bit but the vocals/acapella sounds really distorted. Its not as clear as I would like to be.

1) Prosoniq "isolate" (youtube demo video)
3) Photosounder.

Uh, i don't know your situation but i hope this information may help you somehow.

i am trying to imagine it was me at your end....software really needs to be free for me. There is a world of pro audio software for free.
The examples above are not free.

In this situation i feel it depends on the power gained from the tool that interests you. Justification may then result with regard to the finance.

I did a lot of work trying to extract vocals and have to admit that unless you have a costly software (is there any hardware?) you results will be less than perfect.
