Passport Question

Is it true that your passport is not valid if it's within 6 months of it's expiry date?

I don't think so....

I know some countries won't let you enter if your passport is going to expire within a certain period, but in terms of validity (identifying you as a Canadian citizen) it should still be okay...

I've also heard a passport is valid for up to 5 years after it "expires" for personal identification purposes in Canada...

Maybe someone can clarify?

i would, but since they take your current passport during the renewal, the timing just doesn't work.

When traveling to the US, you're passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your date of travel. If it isn't, you will not be permitted to enter.

If it's not valid for 6 months, you'll need to renew it. You can pay and extra fee and get a rush on it though. I've had mine in as fast as 24 hours before.

+1

I've done this, super convenient and the additional fee isn't too bad, I think it was around $30 at the time..

edit: i was just in the US in January, my passport expires in March, and they did let me in. but now we are in february so i don't know if the same will happen.

i have spend 2 hours reading the homeland security website and couldn't find this rule anywhere.

does anyone know who I can call about this?

cuz i have a life?

no but honestly it's bullshit if this is a rule.

the passport should be good until it expires. not 6 months before. what the shit is that. if they want it to expire 6 months before 5 years, then that's when the expiration should be, no?

Correction.. i was most recently on a cruise and we were told that our passports had to be valid for at least 6 months. However, that might have been due to rules in some of the other countries we went to.

I just found this
http://www.consular.canada.usembass...d_questions.asp

It says for canadians, your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your trip!

hope that helps!
