So you've never finished a song, ever, in those ten years?

I've gone months without doing anything at all (not even starting up a DAW or synth), even half a year, but I never lose interest entirely, and I always end up coming back and finishing something.

[Edit: I even "decided" to quit one time when I was especially frustrated and thought production was a waste of my time, but within a week or two I was back on my computer making new sounds and stuff.]

Damn, dude - that sucks. But, sometimes you just gotta do what you've gotta do. Before you sell everything off and regret it later, maybe you should just pack it up and put it aside for a while. If you don't find yourself missing it after a few weeks/months, get rid of it. Just a thought.

Another thought is to maybe sell everything and just buy yourself a decent instrument (guitar, piano, drums, whatever) and just get back to basics - playing an instrument. I'm a firm believer that knowing how to play an instrument is a huge advantage to anybody who makes music - not because I believe that you need to be a good performer to write music, but because it gives more and different outlets for your musical creativity. For example, when I go through a creative rut, I spend a lot more time just playing my bass or piano, trying to become a better guitarist (I still suck), and/or learning other people's songs. The latter part improves your ear training and helps you apply other people's concepts to your own songs.

One last thought, and I apologize if I should know the answer to this (my memory sucks), but have you ever posted your songs or WIPs for other people to critique? If not, you should, no matter how bad you think they are. You might be surprised to find out that other people love them and/or have suggestions that help you finish something. We're always our own worst critic (well, except for some of the new blood here IYKWIM).

no. I have no drive. I have no talent. all my shit sounds same. I have no music education...well, technically, I attended music school for 4 years and managed to ace every recital without being able to read a single fucking note - just playing by ear. I don't know if it is just my teacher that was naive/stupid/didn't care or if it was me that was such a good fucking liar by being able to perform simply by listening him play. I'd like to think it was just him not giving a shit, knowing all along. But then again, I was graded by other teachers... anywho. irrelevant.

I couldn't read notes to save my life and working 60+ a week - last thing I want is to toil away at some track noone will remember a week from now.

I realized it by listening (of all fucking musicians) -- ENIGMA.

What a fucking waste it has been. full of trivia bullshit knowledge, completely fucking worthless. I have a MIDI patchbay that I bought 5 years ago, pristine, still sealed. I have gear that hasn't been touched since 2007!!!!!!!!!!!! Some, even as far back as 2004.

This is a rant. against myself. I actually fooled myself that I could possibly do something. So angry. I knew that by knowing same fucking progression of chords, as cliche as... I can't even find analogy how cliche it is. I can't sit down and learn it, coz I don't have time, bored and always hated solfedgio (sp?) - e.g. music grammar.

so, just quitting. quitting quitting.

gah. don't even know why I started this stupid thread. I guess I want people to ridicule me. This is the part where you take advantage of that offer.

start producing in the box, it feels less heavy on your consciousness not having hardware dusting around. you need a computer anyway right? so its just the 400USD for a daw, its really not that bad just having it there for when you are bored. suddenly something happens.

It sounds like you're just not having fun anymore.

There's pleanty of people who are into gear and not really into creating decent music. Just play around with your synths... that's pleanty of fun.

I think i know what's your problem , you bought alot of hardware , using hardware to create a decent tune requires alot of hard work and patience , you don't wanna switch to software cause that would meen you've wasted alot of time and money and you don't want to make piece with it , take some time off , then lookup some software to start with

Yes, I know there's no such thing as "finished", i suffer from the same problem, but just get to a point that's close and force yourself.

The feeling is worth it.

I think that's what you're missing if you've been doing this for 10 years and never finished anything. It will give you a whole lease of new life.


And if not then you really know it's time to quit.
