I apologize for the fact that this topic has been covered probably numerous times before, BUT I cant seem to find ANY good tutorial on how to sidechain in FL 9. I found a good one for FL 7, But it did not work in FL 9. So, does anyone know any good links for a Sidechain Compression tutorial in FL 9? Or can someone pm me taking me on how to do it, step-by-step? Again, I am sorry for posting this because its probably been posted 1 million times. Its just frustrating me alot

you can use the peak controller but its not really sidechain compression

And there you go, the kick will duck the synth if it reaches above a certain volume for whatever ratio you set it as. You can use the Att/Rel/Ahead functions to shape how the ducking looks like. The nice thing about limiter is you can see exactly what you are doing to it.

1) create kick
2) go to mixer, link to channel
3) click on the synth that you want to side chain
4) link that to a channel to in the mixer
5) link the synth to kick
6) add fruity peak control to the kick making sure that the "mute" is on
7) link the synth to the kick and choose the input mode to be inverted.
8) ???
9) profit

The problem with using peak controller is that it essentially has a threshold of -inf db... but also does it's job... You have more control using the limiter if you want to simply do sidechain compression.... However, with peak controller you can have it automate other parameters other than volume, which is pretty cool.

I don't get it.

If you use the peak controller you obtain a ducking effect. And if I don't like that effect and consider it horrible would there be still any sense to use sidechain?

I'm new to this as you can see.

Nothing wrong with using peak controller, but with fruity limiter, you have more control with how you want to duck while having a very handy visual interface to seeing how the source signal is compressing the destination.

Peak controller is a sidechain where you can only adjust the ratio

Limiter is a sidechain where you can adjust the threshold, ratio, knee, attack, and delay as well as having a neat visual interface.

I used to use peak controller to do that as well, and I still use it to automate other things for some wierd and interesting effects, but when the limiter came with the sidechain compressor function, I switched to doing that instead.

J.L, When I EQ as I go in my tracks, and the mixdowns are typically pretty quite, and when I side chain say a kick and a bass, its hardly noticeable. Should I wait to sidechain after I master or what?

I never liked the Peak Controller. It always seemed to give an uneven, wobbly kind of effect to whatever I was sidechaining; Fruity Limiter just seems smoother.

You should be able to sidechain before EQing without any problems. What paramters are you using for the compression?
