Any tips for adjusting into a crazy late work schedule?

I normally work at the same time each week, but starting this month I have a odd schedule ahead.

2-11pm for three days, then 10pm-7am for the next two.

So does anyone have any tips to ease the tradition between the last 2-11pm shift and the first 10pm-7am overnight shift? I'm expecting the first time I do this type of transition to be an absolute disaster, but if anyone has any tips or works a schedule like this...I'd be glad to find out how you do it.

what a good thread. I got to work at 3p today and the night person called out so im stuck here till 8a. This isn't the first time it's happened...and all i can say is it's a fucken disaster. Takes me at least 3 days to recover.

Your situation is a little better because you have some time to work up to it. The day before stay up late and sleep in. Take a nap during the day...and get a redbull

I don't drink coffee or energy drinks.

That's what I was thinking though...when I get home Thursday night just stay up until like 5am and sleep through the day before heading to work.

Never had to pull an nighter before? That's basically what you need to do here...just force yourself to stay awake until noon'ish after the 2pm-11pm phase is over.

Definitely the easiest way to change schedules for me...just pulling an all nighter. If you're not good at staying awake for ~30hours or however long, dunno what to say. Maybe someone else has a different method.

No way I can stay awake for 30 hours straight.

Honestly one of the few skills college actually gave me. I also don't touch coffee or energy drinks (except for Jager Bombs!). Just got to find something to do to keep you motivated throughout the night.

I used to work 10-8am shifts doing practically nothing.

It takes a while to get used to, my best advice would be to stay up when you get home for a few hours instead of going to sleep right away.

Think of it this way...you get up in the morning and go to work right?

The morning is now around 8PM for you. It works better that way, maybe sleeping 12-8.

When you get home, just relax and watched some DVRd Rangers games and block all the light in your place out, youll be alright, hang in there.

hahaha

well. if youre on TA because you love EDM and frequent shows then youll be fine because youre probably already somewhat a night owl

Your body will get used to it within 72 hours (science) but your brain and the fact that its work will take longer (experience)

Just make sure to try to do all the "normal" things you did before. Treat it like tha am. IE. you stopped and got coffee every am? Do that still. You slept for 10 hours every night before work? Do not change that (although 10 hours is a lot hahaha)

Try to change things slowly...keep a schedule and keep habits that you had with you morning shift and youll adjust much faster. The idea is mainly to trick your brain.

Add some excersize into your schedule too...a brisk walk before your shift will certainly help. And youll be tired when you get home so sleep. Dont skip sleep because its the am. SERIOUSLY bc your body WILL need to catch up. On average a body can "collect" sleep or the need to sleep for upto 72 hours

IE...in three days you should get about 8 hrs of sleep a night. Thats 24 hours...if you only get 4 a night/am thats 12- your body DOES need you to make up the 20 hours. which is almost impossible. If you keep up this pattern of lack of sleep for over say 3-4 weeks your boday will almost never adjust.
