good open source social network software?

Hi all,

been quite a while since I've posted on here - well over the year mark!

Anyways, having such a diverse collection of smart people on this forum - i figured it'd be a good place to ask my question:

Can anyone recommend any good (open source) social networking site software?

Basically - profiles, news feeds, etc...

Any tips = mucho appreciated!

Do you mean basically an open source alternative to Facebook?

Diaspora might be the most famous, if that's what you're looking for.

Yes, basically an open source alternative to facebook - something i can customise if needs be.

Preferably something i can have complete control of and not something that's hosted elsewhere.

I'm not trying to create another facebook, but I'd like to incorporate a similar functionality to a website I'm working on...

Just not sure how i could take one user - who may be friends with / following 200 users, and display all of their updates (be it status, photos etc) as they happen.

Could write something myself, but would feel better using something that's been tried & tested

would prefer it was asp.net, but for performance reasons, php seems the choice for social networks!
