Getting started in making Trance

Hey guys

I just wanted to know what I need to do in order to start making Trance. Is there any college degree I need? What equipment do I need? etc

no need for a college degree dude

all you need is a computer and a music making software

Heres a small list of software :
- Fl studio
- Reason
- Ableton Live
- Cubase
- Sonar
- Logic (Mac Only)
there are others but these are the main ones (for trance)

Id recommend you check either fl studio or reason as these 2 are the most beginner friendly (in my opinion)

if your on a mac start with garageband then move on to something else when your more advanced

and go ask stuff in the producers section, theyll help you, but use the search function before you ask something because if you ask something that has been answered 1000000000 times theyll hate you lol

You need at least a Masters degree in Sound Design and Engineering. You will also need to practice making heart shapes with your hands and looking like this...

I've been using Pro Tools 8 for the last few months, it works quite well. The built in Xpand plug-in has a lot of great sounds. You can pick up an Mbox Micro for about $200, and it comes with Pro Tools. Other than that, all you really need is a Midi Keyboard. These are the basics of course. And my recommendation for starting out. Pro Tools can easily be swapped for Fruit Loops or Logic or any of the others listed. Reason is an excellent program as well, and quite popular for EDM production.

Step 1: Watch this.

Step 2: Make sure whatever you produce sounds *nothing* like it.

You need to learn an instrument of some kind beside your sequencer. You must learn how to properly express yourself through your music because that's something you cannot achieve with a computer keyboard and a mouse. In many cases not even hands on interaction through midi gear will give you this. That's because it's much easier to learn musical expression by focusing on one basic instrument such as a classical acoustic instrument.

Of course you can go about not learning classic instruments and not learning musical theory, but if you start as a complete novice and go straight to the gear you are likely to only produce mediocre imitations of other's work. At best it will sound crisp but emotionally empty.

The truth is there are no quick ways to make truly good music. In any other field of expertise you expect educated knowledge and experience to be the sustaining drive force. Music is no exception.

So ask yourself, do you want to learn music production or do you want to learn music as well.

One thing that lowered the standards of trance music was the availability of software that allowed a flood of musically uneducated inexperienced "bedroom dwelling producers" to oversaturate the scene.

You have an option to change this though, by getting proper music education before you start writing your music.

It's my suggestion to you.

This.

Basically, all you need is a DAW (digital audio workstation) and from there you can put together your music.

If you want to make professional dance music, all it really comes down to is practice and passion. You'll need the practice to develop the skills needed to make a professional sounding record, and you'll need the passion to push through since it's going to take years before you don't sound awful.

EDIT: So, there's no need to get a degree.

And for pete's sake don't forget to actually visit quality trance event where good proper trance is being experienced. To understand how to create trance you need to be there and to experience it as well.
