It's meant to simulate a drum kit where the drummer strikes the hat by stepping down on the pedal without using a drumstick

open hi hat is when the pedal is when the hats are struck by a drumstick when the pedal is not pressed down

closed hi hat is when the pedal is pressed down and is struck by a stick

never heard about PHH.

SD - snaredrum
CP - clap
CH - closed hat
OH - open hat
RC - ride cymbal
CC - crash cymbal

everything else is bongas, toms, cowbells, shakers, rattlers, woodsticks and triangles.

You said Roland Standards, the PHH is in every Roland TR-909 kit, it's on the G#.

But you're right, if doesn't exist on the original I can't understand why they put on their synth kits...
