how often do u use breakdowns?

im spinning house and trance, and pretty much every song has a breakdown, especially trance and prog house where the breakdown can get up to 1:30 long.
so i was wonderin, do u guys use the breakdown for every song or do u keep the beat going. i kno theres no set rule on this stuff, but what would u say is a good ratio for breakdowns i.e. 1 breakdown for every 3-4 songs.

I usually wait a few songs before i let a break down in...usually around the 4th or 5th track. After that its just depends which songs are up next. I dont like it when a new dj comes on and they let a breakdown play during the first track....it kills the momentum IMO.

If your playing out in a bar or club or something, u can use the breakdowns to give the ppl on the dancefloor a break and go buy some more drinks.

i find that a majority of songs have a significant breakdown somewhere in the song, so what do u do when the track gets to this point and the beat pauses? bring in another track to keep the beat going?

You could do that, make sure your incoming tracks is harmonically related to your breakdown track then though. The hard part is setting your eq's/fader in such a way that the overal volume doesn't skyrocket when u insert your "beat" track (or when the breakdown ends and its own bassdrum kicks back in).

I spin epic trance so it's just build-ups into breakdowns, over and over again, forever.

ALL I PLAY IS BREAKDOWNZ!!!

(I play Techno, which means the majority of the time I decide if and when a breakdown occurs)

Depends entirely upon setting/crowd/mood. Don't ever limit yourself or impose a loose set of "rules" on how a set should be planned, as this will only serve to hinder your creativity in the long-run.

This is what makes hotcues sweet.

I set up hot cues on some trance tracks so I can skip the breakdowns, also if you are playing 3 decks you can put the same song on 2 decks and loop a 4 or 8 beats on one and play the break on the other and it sometimes makes for a very melodious beatfest. Also is great to make a rapid beat roll effect just before the beats start on the breakdown.
(Rapid beat roll effect = make the loop smaller and smaller doof doof doofdoof dohof dohof ddudududududududdududu)

I used to buy 2 sets of vinyls sometimes if a song had a breakdown that I felt could use some doof beatings.

it depends of the lenght and "Quality" of the breakdown, from the start i pick tunes with a really short breakdown, and when a track is outstanding but have a boring breakdown i open my daw and cut it to a shorter duration or i remove it if it's possible.

When i play tech trance i usually leave the breakdown as it is because this are usually quite energetic and it is where they introduce the main melody, playing tech-house or techno is fun due to this ability to mix a lot of tunes and play only a piece of them, that's really a set imo, picking things from here and there to create something new.

A breakdown every 3-4 tracks is fine, wether you like what is playing or not is always a relief getting rid of the kick and bass for a few seconds.
