starting a label quick question about promos

hey guys just a quick question, we are staring a label and wondering what the best way is to establish a list of promo emails for DJs to send our new releases. We have an account with VIP Ultima to send out the promos but obviously require a distribution list, etc ?

of course we aren't asking for any personal information from anybody as these emails are usually quite common for example [email protected] .. a handful of DJs will put it on their twitters, etc, but we're wondering what the best place is to find the rest to establish a good contact list for our records without being considered spam

thanks in advance!

hey mate, cheers for the reply actually i meant the reverse, not so much as receiving promos from artists, but actually sending out our releases before they drop to bigger DJs. for example you hear all these DJs saying they get thousands of promos a week in their inboxes, so i meant in that regard

cheers!

you have to do the leg work or sign on w/ a management company. I've spent the last 3yrs developing my a-list & b-list acts, going to shows, meeting people etc. There's no quick answer to this that i'm aware of, just need to start somewhere and build build build

The forum below, might be a good place to advertise the release, here.

If you're looking for something like a DJ e-mail listing aggregator, I'm not sure where you'd go. I'm not too far into that side of the business end, but I'd think a personal touch would go a long way, in-so-far as cultivating a personal relationship with DJ's you're shopping tune to - but that's my own personal Marketing 101 take on the topic.

It may mean rifling through a ton of DJ webspaces, but I suspect you could accrue a good list, that way, but if they don't know you, it could take a bit longer than you'd like. Even if they do know you, it could take a while.

I'll also add that I get a TON of automated "shared" referrals in my gmail account from other sound-cloud users. Unless someone contacts me, specifically, I just ignore them. It's not an ego thing. I just don't have time to check everything I'm always sent. When people take that personal touch, however, I feel almost obligated to check out their stuff.

same, i really hate this kind of message "Hey friend [...], check this... sent to 1,000 djs while if someone actually writes something exclusively for me, asking for feedback... is a moral obligation for me to check and give my opinion about it.

Go for this since statistically you'll get more and better reactions.

As soon as it's someone I don't want a message from I hit that spam button.

I always look at how many people someone who sends me a track is following and also how many other people they've sent the track to.

1. If you're following 1000 people on Soundcloud, you will 1. Never see anything I upload, and 2. You're most likely just trying to up your comment and hit count and you really could give 2 shits what I have to say.

2. If you've sent the track to 1000 people, same deal. You just want hits and comments, not real feedback. This is the kind of person who deletes negative comments.

That said if it's personal and they actually have something to ask me I always reply and I make sure if I ever send a track to someone else I always throw in a little message.
