American beer is a joke. No offense but it is.
Some of my favourites:
Newcastle Brown Ale (in a class if its own)
Budvar (only tasted this once, can't remember where but I remember it was fantastic)
Becks (an easy to drink lager - no fuss)
Guinness (in a class of its own)
Of course, once you reach Europe you'll find that there are thousands of beers. Enter any country pub and you'll see a beer you've never seen before probably about 12% strong!.
Bear in mind though, pints are bigger in Britain, a fair bit bigger apparently, so you get more for your money
