exactly. my dad has been dealing with the same local mechanic for over a decade now and he's always really helpful. i had him change the oil on my car 2 months ago when i was about 2k miles over the mileage suggested for change. i asked him how much longer i could have driven it and he told me another 5k miles or more hahaha.

They're up-selling. Like what srussell0018 said, it's a business. Probably sold you a cabin air filter, which you most likely needed. A lot of people overlook that shit. My automotive instructor said the inside of a car is 6x more polluted than outside air.

Most auto techs are straight forward, you think they're scamming you but they're not. My teach says it's those 10% that give us auto techs a bad name... :/

i was visiting a mechanic friend of mine while he was at work one time.
he was finishing up a task and i was looking around while waiting.
came upon a 55 gal drum full of nuts, bolts, etc- all of different sizes and material (steel, aluminum, etc).
i asked him what that was.

he said, and i quote-
"when we put something back together and have extra parts, we toss them in that."



needless to say, i almost always do the maintenance on my vehicles myself. this way i make sure that the parts are high-quality (eg. not an oil filter with an element weaker than a paper towel)
and it is done right.
you end up saving lots of money, that is if you have the time and patience to do it.

decent tools are a good investment. you don't have to break the bank by getting snap-on brand, but don't waste your money getting china surplus crap that will break the first time you use it.

yeah it also doesnt hurt to have a relative/family member you can trust that just so happens to own a garage.

my story - some yrs back the front passenger side headlight on my car went out, took it to a Shell gas station garage and they said i'd have to replace the entire headlight, casing and all, which would come up to hundreds of dollars. i was in school then and that kind of cash was big money to me. decided to take it to my uncle's garage (didnt go there first because it was a bit of a drive from my place, the Shell garage was alot closer), turns out that the only thing that had to be replaced was the friggin bulb inside, which my uncle gladly did for FREE.

developing a good business relationship with a trustworthy, competent mechanic is priceless- same with an attorney, doctor, hair stylist, etc.
sure, you can get it done cheaper somewhere else, but is it really worth it?

That's even debatable, to an extent

taking your vehicle to the dealership isn't always the best idea.
in many cases they will sub-contract it out to another garage.
find a shop that you can trust, and stick with them.

A lot og garages are having fights with OEMs due to them making their cars (especially the diagnostic side) dealeship specific. Like not selling garages the right readers to workon the car. Dealerships make their largest amount of money off maintenance. Taking it to a garage is a massive hit in their finances
