Angry Southern Sun dilemma

Recently I obtained a copy of Southern Sun from Perfecto, and I've noticed that after the last little breakdown on the Tiesto mix, the song keeps going for only 2 phrases (errr...at least what *I* call phrases), 64 beats, before fading out.

There is obviously more to the song, I mean it's supposed to slowly dwindle down and end. At least 128 beats.

But this way, mixing is very difficult for there isn't much room to manouever in. Now I can either just mix in quickly, which sounds a little coarse, or mix at an earlier point, which is brutal (as the main theme is still strong before that).

Why did they shorten the song? (I'd say maybe 1 or 2 minutes were lost) What are your thoughts/opinions? I can't help but feeling a little ripped off.

Hmzz... I think DJE is right but there is also the possibility you might've got the second Tiesto remix???? Dunno... chanc eis slight...

Anyways, you need to bring in a track with Short/Energetic intro... I would deffinitely go for System F - Out of the Blue (Original mix). Have the snare roll where the bassline comes in take place about where Tiesto's remix fades out...

Cool

yea, i hav 1 on perfecto, theyre all pressed like that, either drop 2nd wave on the 64th beat after that last break or use it as the last tune in a set

Basically there is no point at looking at it like "ah its solid too mix out of". Southern sun has a small place to mix out as you say but just extend your mix, You say it will sound brutal but if you pick the correct record to blend in there wont be a problem. Maybee a record with a long sequence of just beat, or a soft melody. Mixing over the silences is also usefull.

Good point about them shortening it but i think if it was any longer it would get a bit repetative like Urban Train. Urban Train is 11 mins and is far to long in my opinion.

By the way, im not acting clever and trying to give you a lesson on mixing...Shit happens

Thanks for the help!

No worries, no offense taken whatsoever...why would I? You have offered constructive criticism and I thank you for it.

Thanks to all the suggestions, I will try them as soon as I can. I enjoy being thrust into challenging situations such as these, it provides a little excitement and variety.

Anyway I still don't know why it was pressed like that, it doesn't make much sense to me. It just makes the song ever so slightly incomplete. Kinda like selling a car with one tire missing - it's a nuisance. I have a hunch it might have something to do with marketing.

well.. i have this track too but i forget which label and i haven't paid much attention to it yet, however going off of what you are saying, just have your next record cued up (after being beatmatched of course) and then at the beginning of those last two phrases, bring it in, that way you'll have those 64 total beats to mix/fade in your next track, it will seem like a short mix but hey it works ya kno..

I agree with DamnDirtyApe! This damn tune is really hard to mix in...however, if you find the right tune....Southern Sun (DJ Tiesto Remix) is not that hard to mix out....

bodhichitta : I just tried to mix Rapid Eye - Circa Forever (Iberia Main Room Mix) and it worked like a charm....I am no expert at mixing, certainly got lots of learn, even beat matching is still a pertinent problem till now.

However, if you could match the basslines while the vocals are fading off....that could do it. I guess my try was a lucky one...I managed to match the basslines (without touching the EQ's) and as the intro of Circa Forever kicked in with the synths.....it sounds alright to me...

I guess I would have to record it to ensure that it sounds right....

Most experts would urge us newbies (if you are one) to keep on practicing till we are sick of the song...(aren't we yet?)

Hope this do help a little...I am still trying to learn to count 4/4 and frames

Good luck!

Werd to everyone that has trouble mixing this song LOL.
It is a dilemma because I absolutely adore the track but I have at helluva time mixing it into a set. I often screw up mixing it and feel like breaking the record over my knee in frustration, but then I remember what track is on it.
It dies out really fast after the last breakdown, and breaksdown only a few phrases in... I dunno LOL

You cant go wrong with using songs the man himself uses. Mix out with Mark Norman - Overkill.

Why don't you try to mix it earlier, like before the second breakdown? The main melody is nicely fading away and there are still these nice vocals. You can extend your mix into the breakdown too. It works fine for me

greets
