Forsure I could see that, it makes sense. I wish I could pick up on it more, I've been listening to live sets lately I just dont hear it a whole lot, and it seems like alot of what you pay for getting equipment, although I do agree too much would be annoying.

a live set is different than a radio show set, in radio shows there are almost no effects, maybe they use the filter to drop the bass or Aly & Fila used to use a crunchy flanger in some energetic transitions.
As for live sets it's really annoying if you constantly use the effects, unless you are a pro with it and your kind of sets are like Eddie Halliwell, Kutski, Zabiela etc... however many djs use the filter in their transitions as said, this helps a lot to avoid basses clashing.
Flanger,Delay, Reverb... on some specific tracks it works well but nowadays trance tracks are cluttered enough and trance is a style that it's pretty straight forward, you play the track and let it sound, it's not like techno where "doing something else" it's almost compulsory

traktor s4 isn't a bad investment that's the future. Effects are cool but you don't need them, if you plan to have gigs in club you can bring the controller and do some fancy things with it

I think the S4 is waaaaaaayyy reasonable price to pay for a very decent DJ setup. A decent set of CDJs and a mixer will cost you more.
I've got shitloads of equipment that has cost me lots and lots of cash, and if I mix trance I hardly ever do the effects stuff. Filters = awesome.
If you have the S4 though, HOTCUES!!!!!!!!!!!! = FTW!!!! 8 hotbues/ deck is the shit.. honestly just for that feature alone its totaly worth the price.
Sample decks, I can't really do more than I can with just the 4 decks in traktor pro, <-- I see the vids and such, but I find it annoying to have to set up a set in such detail beforehand. With the standard hotcues I find it much less hassle and more or less the same results of awesomeness...
