I'd stay away from vangard honestly its not really a good synth by any measure. It sounds like plastic, and uses wayyyyyy too much CPU.
For a beginner I just don't recommend it.
But I should still say that it DOES definitely have its uses and thats for layering. It does definitely impart its own unique sonic characteristics and is great for layering, but for the most part its still a shit synth that uses more CPU than any other synth I have. I mean fuck it uses more CPU than z3ta and sounds nowhere near as good.
On the other hand though it is extremely simple to learn. So I guess for newbies thats a good thing. The first synth you should get/learn how to program I'd have to say is v-station. Very simple sound, quality filters, low CPU use, can do a lot of different sounds as well as fm.
