I see these "remix" contest's and it really just confuses me.
Why?
I mean...I see these contests where the producers give out on avg. of 5 stems and asks you to remix it. MOST submits are 99% of the artists original bodies of work that feature a small % to no stems usage given at all.
To me, I would think that the original artist/producer gives stems that THEY want you to use for a reason. I mean hell, if they wanted you to submit a whole new body of work then why not just say it. Don't offer any stems or maybe just a very limited amount [say vox and maybe a bassline].
Really..I mean do these producers even think about that?

The best remixes make good reference to the original and respect it's core attributes that made it good originally.

How do people actually win these things if they dont even take the stems offered and create a song using minimal stems given?
Do the producers offering the contest not even listen to the submissions?

I would think one would want to keep the integrity of the original but alter it in a means that would not destroy the original.

remixs make money and its also a good way of getting your name out there.

a friend of mine made a remix of havens cry a classic hard dance track from scratch and people where going crazy for it.
it was proof that if you get creative and put a spin on it a good tune can come from it.

uhh, it's possible dude. some producers would rather work with their own equipment and sounds, what works in one mix might not work in another.

my remix of Spectrum from TasteXperience was nothing like the original, I even added a breakdown and melody that wasn't in the first version. I don't think I used a single stem. it was Russell's favorite remix out of the 7 or 8 that were done. it's not impossible.

I mean, that's very cool and all but at the same time...why even offer stems at all? Why not just say, give me your best track?

He offered stems for people who can use them. I didn't have any use for them. Is it really that hard to understand? Why limit the potential for remixing by denying stems to people who need them, or insisting producers use the stems in their remix?

because some producers like stuff to work with they may construct the track from stems and decide on what to do with it later ect.

then you can't charge can you if you don't offer something to download.

Don't you usually have to buy the "right" to remix it with those sort of contests, too? I thought that was the implication, if you remixed the track without buying the stems they wouldn't accept it.

that's just fucking stupid, though. or genius, depending on how much you care about the business end of things.
