NI Audio 10 DJ for production

Hey guys, just a simple question and was wondering if anyone could help. I'm looking to buy a soundcard this weekend. Thing is, I want to use one for production, but I really need an audio 10 DJ as well. How is it for production? I'll most likely end up using cubase, ableton or reason.

Thanks

I need it for the DVS function, I will most likely be purchasing a pair of turn tables as well + it's to play out. I was just wondering if I could kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. I would be getting the full TSP2 package, and the price is actually great at $500.

Using an interface that has DVS for production isn't a very smart idea. As CalvP said, you don't want to lose downtime. You'll be using that card massively for both DJ'ing and Producing, therefore, it might sock you in the face and choose to explode. If you don't need many ins and outs for the production interface, I would recommend looking at Focusrite's upcoming interface, the Scarlett 2i2. This way, you can have a dedicated DJ interface and a dedicated cheap but amazing production interface.

You CAN'T use Traktor as a DVS without an NI soundcard (Scratch Duo, Audio 4, 6, 8 or 10), or an NI Certified mixer like the Pioneer DJM 900 Nexus.

Isn't that the whole point of the thread? He wants to use an NI DJ interface for DJing AND Production. We're saying it's best to have dedicated cards.

Yea that may be the way to go. The second sound card will have to wait a few more weeks I guess. The price/specs on that one look good. Got anything in the 200-300 dollar range with a firewire connection?

I'm a huge fan of Focusrite interfaces. You can pick between the Saffire 14, Saffire 24, and Saffire 24 DSP. Those, I believe, are all in the 200 - 300 USD range and they're all FireWire.

I'm using it (traktor audio 10) as my dj/production card. my e-mu 1820m fried a while back. it works fine, i can get under 10ms latency w/out any problems. it has midi in/out, but no balanced i/o, and no digital i/o. compared to the benchmark DAC1 pre, the headphone amp just plain sucks. the old audiodj8 drives my hd-650's better. also, the bass always sounds a little distorted, and the stereo field sounds REALLY narrow compared to the benchmark DAC1 when using headphones. i never really noticed the problems w/the bass sounding messed up untill i started using the DAC1 pre. the convertors aren't bad, but the headphone amp in my opinion is atrocious. it's underpowered, and low quality.

i hated having two cards on my computer. everytime i wanted to use my daw, the daw would always default to the ni card. had to switch to my e-mu card everytime. i'm happier now w/one card, i just fire up what ever program i'm going to use, and i just go... no more menue diving to select the card i need to use before i get to do anything.

if i were not using traktor, i would have gone for a raydat (rme), and have all my stuff connected digitally. -i'm using benchmark convertors, so i don't need a fireface. my second choice would be an echo card.

Why do you need to switch? Set the default of Traktor to your DJ interface, and the default of the DAW to your production interface. Done.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The Sapphire Pro 16 looks really good for the price/features. Wouldn't be surprised if I end up getting that. The local music hardware store sells it as well so it'll be easy to obtain.
