It's the promoter that brings the safe, more commercial DJs. They used to bring Cox, Digweed and even they even had a Sasha residency a few years back. They've changed so much ever since EDM blew up in the commercial scene. They often bring Joris Voorn, Nic Fancuilli, Steve Lawler, Victor Calderone, etc and that's about as underground as they'll go and it's unfortunate that they stick them in the smaller clubs. Recently, the brought Layo & Bushwacka but there was very little promotion for them. |
Meh... The sound system is alright but needs some work, it hurts my ears. They def need to adjust it every night and it's obvious they don't. And yes, def lots of creepers. I generally like the music played by the locals in the patio a lot better.
Panorama has been doing this for soooo long, it looks like it's their strategy to keep being the top players in the biz by going mainstream. Not many people in DC are as knowledgeable about the music as for example New Yorkers, so one of the ways of bringing out a crowd (crowd that has changed a lot in recent years) is bringing a big name that people are familiar with: Tiesto, Avicii, Armin, SHM, etc; names recognised by the masses. The whole party scene in general (not all though) is more focused on the superstar DJ instead of it being about a night of quality music and the DC crowd for the most part (again, not all have fallen for it) has been indoctrinated over the years to jump on the hottest trends and drink the koolaid instead of educating people about music. Because of this, bringing more underground music to a niche market is just not profitable for an event production crew as big as Panorama.
Another thing I've noticed is that most of Panorama's guests are AM Only artists, it's obvious they have AM Only locked down in DC. When was the last time you saw an AM Only artist booked by someone else? It doesn't really happen often. If this isn't obvious to you yet, take note Paco Osuna is playing @ Lima on Nov 17th, an artist that would be more fitting for Life, 88 or STP. Their smaller events @ Lima on Thursdays and now Josephine on Fridays are a bit more experimental with their bookings. It's easier to fill up a smaller room, and they throw them in venues that are more geared towards bottle service, so there's always going to be a crowd that just wants to be seen throwing money around dressed in suits, tube dresses and knockoff Louboutins, celebrities, etc and Panorama makes a profit in the process. When Layo & Bushwacka played @ Lima 2 weeks ago I was very disappointed. Most commercial shit I've ever heard them play. It started getting better @ around 1, but by that time I was bored to tears and just left. Thursdays @ Lima are prob not that heavily promoted because they have built their following over the years and people are going to show up anyway and it's not their big money maker anyway; Saturday night is.
The way I see it, Panorama is all about the money. They own several venues in the city, have an electronic music night on Thursdays, Fridays AND Saturdays and I'd say as much as THOUSANDS of people flock to their events and venues every week. Why would they try to make only a handful of people happy when they are making hundreds of thousands of dollars a week (if not millions)? You don't run a business from the top by pleasing a few. I'm not a fan of what Panorama does, but credit has to be given where credit is due: they sure do know how to make money.
About 7 years I heard that for the longest time the goal was for Glow to be the Trance destination in America. But let's face it, nobody really gives a shit about trance anymore and that's prob why they don't book a lot of trance all that much nowadays.
If you want underground, go to U Hall, Sweet Spot or Warehouse Loft.
Oh, and FYI, CL is playing on Nov 26th in DC.

lots of fun people and the staff has treated me great everytime. stemming off what euphoria said about the Megabus, I would give yourself 5 hours to get there. There have been many many times when we have been stuck in traffic on that godforsaken highway.
