I'm about to pull the trigger on 100GB worth of Kirk Hunter samples and don't really want to load that up on my already 50% full sample drive.
I also don't want to be arse raped with the current HDD prices so I was going to buy a cheap 320GB external for now and run it off that for a couple of months until prices stabilise.
I have Kontakt set up so that it utilises DFD as much as possible so I was wondering if the USB drive would bottleneck a little, although saying that most of any given project will still stream samples from the internal sample drive.
I might be wrong but running audio from an external, unless it's like eSata is generally a bad idea.

i run all my sampels from my 500g seagate usb without any issues it will b a bit slower then a sata or ssd because of the conversion rate. or if you wanted to you can just buy a cheap internal ide and put on a sata converter for a few bucks.

I think i'll probably give it a go as I really need something as a backup drive anyway.
I'm pretty sure there will be a fair amount of buffering to RAM with Kontakt's DFD option so I think just one library on there for now should work OK.

This is on a PC btw.
Cheers
you will want to actually make kontakt not use dfd as much as possible if you are using an external drive. You will have to compensate with ram. But if you have a pc, getting 16 gigs is pretty cheap these days.
dfd = direct from disk
high dfd = less ram , more disk streaming
low dfd = more ram, less disk streaming
sampler mode = all ram.
I run the hidden settting
pimp mode. raid SSD in a mac pro , maybe i will just double it to ram cause you have so much it doesn't fucking matter and your girlfriend is hot.

this option is only in 5 tho.
I'm still on K4, although more RAM and less DFD makes perfect sense.
I'm using 8GB at the moment, but I've been doing a bit of orchestral lately and that's already not enough really, 16GB is a good call so i'll probably do that anyway.

he is actually my nemesis. But I respect an opponent that can put me in place over the usual dick juggling knobhead. If anyone ever got close enough to make me hit my girlfriend , it would be him.
