What's music worth

I never post here but I'm hoping for a lot of response on this and a wider point of view that of a DJ/producer (the section I usually post). Casual listeners concern me just as much on this topic.

I'm not starting this discussion to identify the ones that download from illegal sources or the ones that gladly pay top dollar. The discussion wether illegal downloads are possibly immoral or unethical doesn't interest me.

* If you have to name a fair/ideal price for a single track (free included), what would be worth?
* And what would be the ideal source to get it from? Would you rather stream online than download?
* Would you rather download so you can burn it for a gig/dj-set?
* The product is limited to mp3 downloads for research purposes.
* Would you find it a problem if you would purchase/obtain the downloads through a new website? Or would you rather get it through social media?

Looking forward to your point of view!

What kind of quality are we talking about? mp3? WAV?

I want to be able to download it and have it on my computer.

I prefer having physical copies. Be that CD or 12".
If that's not possible, or if it's something like bandcamp/self-released, I'll buy MP3 as long as the bitrate is 320kb/s.

Re: price, it varies too much for me to give you a figure. Some tracks I wouldn't lay down more than a couple cents for. Others, I'd pay $100 if I had to.

As for the source, I like me a no-bullshit, no "we're just licensing this to you, you don't actually own anything" flac download. Anything else and I won't consider buying regardless of the price, because what you're selling isn't what I'm looking to buy.

I think the £0.69 per track charged by Amazon MP3 is fair. I would always rather download than stream.

Unfortunately choice would be limited to MP3 for now. 320 is not a problem though.

Sketch me you ideal situation. Flac unfortunately is not an option right now to limit the research somewhat.

Thank you. For now it's limited to the digital domain only (so no hardcopy products).

I like when artists ask you to pay what you think it's worth. It's more fulfilling when you pay for your enjoyment instead of as a requirement.

I rarely stream music, unless it's a quick search for track on Youtube. Purchasing the track and having it available for download is virtually a necessity for me.

As for my preferred source, I mainly shop at online DJ stores (Beatport, Juno etc) and iTunes, generally sites that were designed soley for music purchasing.

As for the pricing.....

This.

I understand that the music industry is still struggling and most minor labels find it difficult to make a profit, most likely due to illegal downloads (wait... we're not going down that route), but considering there are no material costs involved, I consider any track priced under the £1 mark to be reasonable.

I think 99c (US) for a track is the right price, at least right now. 320kbps, no VBR, and I want to be able to download it.

Amazon MP3 is my favorite digital music store, but the VBR is annoying. I like that they allow you to download the track and add it to the cloud.
