Couldn't find a thread for this.. Can someone recommend me a decently priced, unlimited bandwidth ISP? I'm sick of Rogers!! My usage was over 400% lol

Check out FibreStream (www.fibrestream.ca)

They offer unlimited usage and have pretty good pricing.

I think they only offer service to condos and apartments in Ottawa and Toronto though.

FibreStream looks good, never heard of them but their prices are great. Said they don't service my condo building though so it would be a no go for me.

I was in the same boat a couple months ago, sick of Rogers and constantly hitting the cap. I did pretty in depth research on all the vendors that would serve Toronto. I ended up going with Acanac because they win in almost every category.

Basically with Rogers I had:
$56 a month
60GB bandwidth
10mbps

With Acanac I now have:
$43 a month (paying upfront 6 month term)
unlimited bandwidth
15mbps

So the upgrade was win, win and more winning. When I called to cancel Rogers retention offered me an upgraded package for $46/first year, $50/second year with 90GB bandwidth and signing a 2 year deal. I just laughed at them cause Acanac was still unlimited, cheaper, and faster aside from having the joy of handing your money to an independent company instead of a beast like Rogers. And the biggest thing to be honest is that I wasn't aware, but Rogers was for sure throttling the hell out of my torrent DLs. I would be lucky to max out at 150kbps previously with their "10mbps" service. This week with Acanac I was DLing a single movie at 1.2+ mbps via torrents. A 1.5GB movie finished in like 20 minutes or so. Rogers publicly claims to only throttle your P2P uploads to 40kbps but with Acanac I regularly download at 10x what my max was with Rogers. So I don't believe that for a second and am pretty sure they throttle DLs as well.

Acanac works a bit different in that you pay for the service before you use it instead of at the end and you get a cheaper rate the more months you pay for. They also have a ton of extras if you care bout that (secure browsing, 100GB online storage, email accounts blah blah). One nice thing too is for each person you refer you get a month free as well. So if you choose to go with them feel free to use my customer ID as a referral it's "rszc6rav". Thanks in advance...

The closest competitors I found were 3web then after them TekSavvy. Both are quite comparable to Acanac but they cost a bit more. So if Acanac aint your thing, check those 2 out. Also if you can try to go with cable over DSL. If the gov decides to impose bandwidth limits cable will be after DSL, if ever, and to some extent they will likely have to be more lenient with cable since you DL so much faster/more. Another small thing but worth mentioning is that if you go DSL and need service most of these companies will send a Bell tech to your place. So that means money for Bell and you still have to deal with their crap service and techs. For cable most these companies send one of their employees or outsource to a smaller service company.

If you really hate Rogers like I did, go for the 1-2 punch and cancel your cable as well. With a good internet connection and the ability to hook up your computer to a TV you'd be surprised at what you can stream and the quality just keeps getting better. Using plugins like Veetle you can get pretty much regular definition cable quality streaming. With some new school bunny ears too you can get all the big channels in HD which believe it or not is noticeably better quality than cable HD as the signal is uncompressed. It's a small thing but never having to see the name Rogers on a bill is freaking SWEET after being overcharged by them for so long. For all those thinking "oh I could never get rid of them completely" that's how I thought before and how they want you to think as well. Just try it for a few months and worst case scenario if you miss them you go back and sign a new subscriber deal later on for cheaper than you were paying before anyways.

Hope all that info helped. Just going off memory as I did the research a few months ago but I put a decent amount of time into and those were my findings. Hope it helps...

GGM gave you pretty good advice. Acanac's pricing is definitely one of the best. The only disadvantage with Acanac is the limited tech support. But I think they rely on their community forums as well as their customers being a little bit more tek savvy then the average joe. (Usually when you want unlimited usage, you know how to hook up a dsl modem).

Of course there's the UBB decision as well to take into consideration as well. I believe FibreStream will be the only company offering unlimited usage if the UBB decision goes through because they run on dark fibre.

One thing is for sure - dump your rogers connection and don't let them reel you back in on the phone with another contract!

Do any of you combine your internet and digital cable? I will be moving in a couple of months and need to look into internet/cable. I figured Rogers would be the best bet b/c of the discounts in combining services.

Would it still be cheaper to go with one of the cheaper internet companies and get cable with Rogers by itself?

Ya I've heard that about Acanac as well but so far it hasn't been an issue. They fedex'd me my new modem, I swapped the Rogers one out and it worked perfectly. Never been an issue for me but from my experience cable connections are low maintenance, just restart modem/router if you have issues and that usually fixes it.

FibreStream looks sick and to be honest if they serviced my building I'd probly try them out. But my building complex is 1200 units, downtown and only 5 years old so if they don't service us I'm guessing they probably don't service many others in Toronto. Bell Fibe is the only fibre optics working in our building but the last thing in the world I need is blazing fast speeds with a chincy Bell cap on my bandwidth. That's like having a Porsche you can only drive through school zones with.

When I had cable/internet with them I think I got $8 off or so for combining services. I saved $13 by getting rid of my internet with them, so yes I'd say it'll still be cheaper to not use Rogers. Even if it works out to the same cost you're at least giving less business to the giant and you get unlimited bandwidth to boot so you never have to worry about that. If you don't care much about speed/bandwidth caps you can even go DSL for $20-30/month and save way more than Rogers would ever give you as a discount.

Definitely. The Rogers bundle for Internet and TV saves you 5% on your total bill. Basic Cable and Basic Internet will run around $60-$70 a month so you save maybe $4/mo.

Switching your Internet service can save you $10-$20 a month....

I'm on Acanac Cable. The catch is that you have to sign up for the whole year, but it's unlimited, and it comes out to $40-ish a month.

Speeds are very consistent at 2MB (megaBYTES, not megabits) per second.
