‘None genre’ seems to be the new trend now, along with Trouse as they abandon ship. So how does that make us true Trance musicians feel? The ones that have dedicated our lives to this genre we feel so passionate about. Angry? Bitter? I think relived is the right word.

j00f speaks the truth. a few years back when corporate trance djs dominated, they were all waving the trance flag, but now its fallen out of favor (ie. guetta house has taken over) they are suddenly proclamining themselves "genre free". makes me sick how spineless they are. theyve prostituted the genre and left it to die.

guess thats where true trance djs and producers like j00f, airwave & christopher lawrence come in but I feel bad for them having to rebuild a scene thats in shreds right now.

I support his efforts but I also think that the changes we are seeing with Trance are also a direct result of what the new EDM fans want to hear -- many don't have the patience to be taken on a journey with their music....

It is VERY difficult these days to find any 'Trance' sets that take you on a journey. Longer sets are a rarity, many new partiers tend to lack patience... they don't want a 5-hour "journey"... they want to hear the 'bangers' and go home.

...Prior to the Internet/Youtube a producer only really became recognized (by name) when popular DJs were playing their tracks -- now things have evolved to the point that producers have to brand themselves from the start. Also, it seems the new EDM fans today focus less on whether someone is a good "DJ" and more on what popular productions they are associated with.

As well, too many 'Trance' DJs are playing the SAME tracks -- years ago it was more about having a distinct sound... I guess part of the "journey" discussion -- now, with smaller sets, DJs(/producers) just want to play/promote their own productions(or those of their label) leaving less diversity/experimentation in sets. I used to enjoy it when the more popular DJs went outside their main genre and incorporated some Techno/Breaks/etc. in their sets.... now many play it safe... or play a random dubstep tune that does NOT flow at all.

Nine years ago we were also directly involved with bringing these lesser known sounds to audiences, bringing the likes of J00f (http://bit.ly/yxwQOl), Orkidea, Johan Gielen, Dumonde, and others to Toronto because back then only the Armin/Ferrys/PVDs were getting any attention. We also did our part with Livesets and singles of tracks that we thought should have had more exposure... the caveat being that, back in those times, anyone associated with MP3 was "evil" and we had our fair share of headaches as a result. So, it's surprising to see, even today, how some torrent sites are openly distributing music (that is available for sale) and readily accept 'donations' for their 'efforts'. Boggles my mind.

Agree with you on the hate part, way too many genre-whores these days who trash other forms of EDM yet expect their own to be respected. Sure, the odd jab here and there is ok but as others have ranted about in the past some Trancers take it WAY too far.

We do what we can, the past two winners of our DJ contest - DJ Apsara / RoryJames - had sets (http://bit.ly/yeTMJi) that were not your typical 'Trance'. As a result, this pissed off some people - who emailed us saying we were not being 'true' to 'Trance' (i.e. not enough 'cheesy'/commercial tunes). Unreal.

While it's clear Trance is going through a transition phase this is not necessarily a bad thing (considering the past few years).

Seriously though, it's starting to get more and more tiring with every rant and i'm still confused as hell about these following standpoints:

- What makes his sound 'true trance'. On what grounds are you even supposed to claim something like that?
- How is his position any different from all the others thousands of good producers who are unable to attract attention because their music doesn't follow certain trends?

From what i can see they were just in a luxury position back in the nineties and now their music's abstract and druggy nature is starting
to catch up with them. They're already doing far better then anything i would have expected from listening to their music.

I'm still sympathetic to his cause, but this is just getting stupid now.

I wish J00F would let someone else look over these articles and give him some editorial advice, because the good and constructive things he has to say are often undermined by these unnecessary sticking points. I really would not call this article a "rant" as such, because it's actually very positive in tone. The real point here should be that 2011 was a very good year for trance and 2012 promises to be even better, in no small part because of J00F's work in promoting and supporting the music he believes in. But he spends more time taking issue with the negative side of the industry and making purist divisions, so this will once again be labelled as a rant and dismissed out of hand by people he's trying to communicate with.

I think Trance is on the way to get into a very good situation musically. It's still far removed from hipsterdom and hype (calling something 'Trance' on RA is seen as an insult) and it's starting to remove itself from the commercialism that has plagued Trance for so long, as more and more casual listeners are instead drawn to Dubstep and Electro-House, which will eventually take over the spot of Trance.

People like to label things. People like to say 'I listen to genre X!' and not some awkward explaination of what the music sounds like. I think it's not really about money but more about basic human nature. New stupid genres and genre terms will always be invented, because people want them.
