couch-surfing

My friend and I were thinking of spending a week in Paris in February. Being poor, and Paris being expensive, we were looking into couch-surfing. I just signed up, and am pretty excited about the idea.

Also, I am moving from Utrecht to Amsterdam in a few weeks and will for the first time, be living on my own. Always one to pick up hitch-hikers and take in strays, the idea of hosting really appeals to me. I like wandering strangers, like meeting people and sharing my home.

Does anyone here have any experience with this concept?

Visiting or hosting?

Anyone on the board?

i dont trust random people in my home. there are too many shady individuals that prey on the kindness of others.

What do you feel about staying with someone else

i feel a blockbuster horror movie will be made out of this idea. Nice knowing you spitty, try to stuff your vaginal cavity with razor blades for extra gore.

Talk to "erratik" (I think is his nick) if he's still on here. He's a CS veteran.

Couchsurfing is huge in Europe. Never done it myself but I know people who swear by it, pretty authentic way to see a city properly if your strapped for cash imo.

Just make sure you read up on your hosts feedback, this will give you an idea of what to expect. Couchsurfers are pretty good with providing accurate accounts and kudos for good stays. Good luck & be safe.

It where I store them anyway!

Lightout - are you in Berlin? or Toronto?

I've gotten a lot feedback from chicks who think its a great idea. I am pretty sure Meagan and I will couch-surf in Paris.

Has anyone hosted? Or known anyone to host? I'm more nervous about that....

i would find it awkward to live in a stranger's home. kind of like sharing a hotel room with a complete stranger.

I just spent 6 months traveling and did have an account on the CS website.

For the most part, I found a lot of people traveling and not able to offer their couch (which sometimes isn't a couch at all, despite the name - I've heard stories of really great arrangements). I was also apprehensive about staying with dudes - also heard stories of "the futon was broken and the only spot was in the guy's bed"

I'm sure these cases aren't the norm, but I wasn't really that desperate to sleep on people's couches so I didn't try that hard when it started to require a lot of effort or raise a lot of uncertainty on my end.

Also, the website and boards are highly cruisy, just be forewarned.

You might actually get some decent CS opportunities in Paris in the off season - please let us know how it goes! (I'm going to Paris later this month)
