Christopher Lawrence on Next Big Things

Came across this quote from Christopher Lawrence in an interview and it got me thinking about how fast djs are turning over these days. Not that the top 100 is a good indicator but I'd never heard of half of the djs on there this year. I can't keep up anymore, am I alone?

Which new artist(s) do you tip for success in the future?

That’s a tough one. A lot of artists become successful now as a result of marketing and polls, rather than perfecting their craft as producers and DJs. Artists show up from nowhere in the Top 100 and suddenly they’re the next big thing. Problem is there are so many “next big things” that the market has become saturated and the audience is developing a short attention span, so DJs have to work harder than ever to maintain their success. The artists that I hope to see having success are the ones who play from the heart and do it for the love of the music, you find a lot of them in the underground scene, for example John 00 Fleming who’s having a massive resurgence at the moment. My other favorites are Sean J Morris, Jonathan Allyn and Ismael Rodriguez.

You're not alone, there's too many DJs these days and not enough quality control. A new producer makes one big track on Beatport and suddenly he's DJing clubs circuit with no DJ skills whatsoever and making a right mess of it most of the time.

I generally avoid newer Djs until they've proven themselves with quality productions and live sets. Most of them sound the same and they all seem to play the same tracks so I don't think I'm missing much.

are a bit at odds are they not?

If you want to judge someones DJing skills listen to them DJ, the quality of the tracks they make isnt going to tell you much about that. Although I agree with the general point, but it's not like it's anything new.

think what hes saying is new producers show up and make one big track (which isnt usually a quality track) then they start getting booked as djs (which theyre not). they basically suck at both but everyones treating them like the second coming. seen it a million times but its happening more and more lately.

real talent reveals over time thru your body of work and with consistency.

did you know that drinking cyanide makes you popular? not as popular as taking a shotgun and blasting your brains out (see Kurt Cobain), though.

Also, playing with your ball in traffic also tends to increase your popularity.

fucktard.
