Dave King - Tales Of The Future [Trance]

When I first got into electronic music I always felt there was something very futuristic about trance. Something about the swirling synths and acid lines and very electronic sounding bass but it was like it had fallen through a wormhole from a not so distant future where technology had taken over (think the worlds of films like Blade Runner or games like Syndicate). I decided that I wanted to do a trancey mix and have tried to capture that futuristic feeling, I think it works but have a listen yourselves.

Tracklist obviously looks stellar Dave, will give this a listen. I know quite a few of these, getting to the point now where I can see passages in a tracklist and know the tracks have been mixed harmonically.

When I was getting into trance, I always loved the futuristic and energetic stuff. I listened to my fair share of uplifting stupidity, but it was still generally on the driving, synthetic side. I never had time for the fluff. I've had a theory for a while that the futuristic side of trance (and EDM in general) died off a lot after the year 2000, when the pre-millenial futurist buzz of the Internet, PlayStation, The Matrix all died off. When we all got smart phones and MP3 players, the future didn't seem too exciting anymore, and that's when trance lost its focus.

Massive mix, Dave, absolutely massive. The first hour or so was just perfect, great mixing, flow, tunes, everything. One of those sets that has your heart beating faster. I agree with justin - if you'd ended on the Orkidea remix of Rendezvous it would be one of the best TA mixes ever. After that it did lose the momentum a little bit, in terms of there being quite a few unspectacular psy tracks that weren't as special. It's worth sticking through, though, because it ends with a flourish of killer tracks from Wizzy Noise, BPC and Magnus.

Everything is spot on in technical terms, your mixing is extremely tight and yet you can hear the human hand behind each transition, and your transitions are invariably ballsy and perfectly placed to keep up the momentum. The only thing that bugged me is that the sound quality was a little "muffled" early on, particularly Fundamental. That's such a crisply produced tune, yet it sounded a little bit muddy here for some reason.

But yeah, fantastic mix overall. Would love to see you lay this kind of set down in the flesh.

Looks fantastic Dave.

Certainly get what you mean about the futuristic aspect of trance and how it seems to be lost nowadays somewhat, guess that is something to do with the ubiquity of smart technology as Jack mentions. I grew up dreaming about dark dystopian neon-lit cities, of which proper, driving trance seemed the only suitable soundtrack. Glad I'm not the only one.

God yea the first 11 tracks are seriously a different gear. Definitely managed to capture the 'futuristic' atmosphere. The intro was absolutely terrifying! Had all my hairs on end there. The transition into fire signs is one of the best I can recall in recent sets, and I also loved all the tunes from J00F recordings. Its also very impressive how comfortably you go from breaks to trance and back again. Makes for some breath taking energy, and I don't know anyone who does it so well.

I agree that the second half isn't quite as enjoyable, but it's still great if you enjoy psy trance. You managed to shift mood from uplifting to dark very smoothly, but I suppose the problem is that I enjoyed your more uplifting stuff so much I wanted more of it! (to anyone reading this review who hasn't downloaded this yet, I use 'uplifting' as a genuine adjective here rather than the crappy sub-genre)

How you fixed for Friday 13th April? Want a set at Entropy?

Cheers for the kind words fellers. I'm glad other people got the whole futuristic thing, was worried I sounded, like, well pretentious

Jack I think your analysis is correct, the advance of technology (as far as the general public are concerned) has been incremental rather than big steps. Were at a stage now where big leaps in tech do happen but often behind the scenes in manufacturing and the enabling infrastructure. The improvements they bring are exploited by manufacturers and developers who in their rush to get a product to market release something that's not quite ready and the users experience suffers somewaht. So I think many people have become jaded, the future is no longer a place of wonder but a place full of frustration and bugs lol. Anyway, I digress...

With the mix, I did wonder whether people would suggest the two hours should have been seperate mixes, although I also wondered whether that wwas because tthe transition out of rendezvous dropped right down to the percussion. The thing is I wanted to do a mix that was longer than an hour and I desperately wanted to include Autobahn so while it did cross my mind to end it there I couldn't heh. When i was doing it I had in mind a 4 - 6am set somewhere and after the peak of rendezvous I could just imagine a load of sweaty gurners needing more of a solid groove to slog it through to the finish

Jack, with sound quality I think I might have cocked up there. Normally I save off the raw wave of my recording and the save processed mp3s as copies. I recorded this on the Saturday morning before heading up to Manchester for the WHP and was desperate to have this on the player for the journey (as well as get it in as a comment on joofs fb post, mine was just after yours which was a bit random). In my haste I didn't save a wav copy and processed the master and then saved it as mp3. The mastering vst I put my mixes though has a multiband dynamics component that I normally turn off for mixes cost it can give that sort of muddy sound on already mastered track but I forgot and then couldn't go back. Bit of an Arse.

Jon, I am there. After our chat on pm I thought the next one was march which would've been the same weekend as the half Marathon I'm doing, the one weeknend I have to be teetotal. What relief. I'm going to be up in brim at the end of Jan for atomic jam, are you going?

Sorry for the loser length post. The football today has been really, really shit.
