HArdfloor 303 style

I've created a simple yet pretty effective emulation of the Roland TB 303 in Logic Studio using the ES1 synth ... (I used an online tutorial on loopblog and written by Steve Hillier - here if anyone's interested)

I'm very happy with my use of it so far but I'm still a long way from the sort of magic the hardfloor guys manage to achieve ...

The kind of thing I've got in mind is the break down in their classic remix of Mori Kante's Yeke Yeke - Those long strecthed out gently gliding notes ... How on earth do you configure my synth to achieve (I'm think the ADSR along Cutoff and Resonance settings but am getting no where with it).

Any advice would make my decade!!

Alan

You're like 20 years late brah.

Thanks for turning me onto the mix. I know of Yeke Yeke and Hardfloor but didn't realize Hardfloor had done a remix of the song.

Any chance the it is just a note being held instead of releasing quickly?

Whenever I hear songs like that, I am reminded of Sasha & Digweed Northern Exposure which to me is the typical sound of the mid 90's. I never cared for Renaissance but loved that one.

I'm very well aware of that thank you!!

In fact you touch on an interesting point - the 303 defines an era (particularly in the UK) of trance/techno/hard house that was far more underground than what Trance has become now.

It's true to say that you were just as likely (in fact more so!!) to happen across this music at illegal raves as you were in clubs or at festivals. With the great commercialisation of trance that took place at the end of the 90's (Thanks to Ibiza!! ), the use of the 303 diminished.

Other people I know of from those halcion days regard contemporary trance as little more than a joke as it has lost everything that gave it an edge (and most of us - not all though - made it thorugh pretty unscaved!!).

I'm not saying the 303 made the difference, It's just highly symbolic of an era that's long since passed!!

That's why I feel I need to explore - there's fewer and fewer enthusiasts left!!

303 was pretty and is sill used quite a bit in the more harder edged genres.

Never really went away. Used more as a stab than a line but still. with distortion, it really is a nice sound that is just classic and will never sound old.

I think you would be hardpressed to find a track that actually uses it as a bass line. It was always more of a lead than a bass synth but those first pitched basses you started hearing close to 1997-9 in germany especially were the 303 using the square wave rather than the more popular saw.

and yes hardtrance , hardstyle and those types of music still use the 303 quite a bit. And as a said, more like a stab than a bassline of lead.

if it doesn't have a lead, its a total baseline in itself which needs side chain

your lips might be in that vicinity but i can guarantee that isn't coming from my ass.

Like I said, you will be hard pressed to find a recent track. Josh Wink's track which i think everyone knows uses it as you describe but that was along long time ago. lately you will find it treated if used like that track as it was used in warp brother's rip ie a lead which is supported by a bass.

as far as that pitched bass

In this instance an obvious 303 that is ran thru fx but not an actual " acid " line and a square wave unlike the saw wave people associate with the 303 lead.

this was a german thing in like 1998 that really stayed german which can still be heard in some really cheasy Euro Dance now. And when I say german, i basically mean not London , not Paris and not NA. So Berlin and all the people that supplied those labels.
