As the days here are getting darker and colder, I have decided to do Part II of my Caverns series. This time with ultimate deep dubbyness, some dark italian drones and less dancefloor functionality. Listening when it's dark outside, on high volume and headphones recommended!

listened to this one cuz of the Koner track. probably the most directed set i heard from you, first 40min seemed really definite about rising out of the depths.

some technical criticism: dunno if you mixed this live or not, but your levels are off, every time a track enters it tends to jump in volume slightly. the tracks you chose don't need that kind of extra oomph, they got enough of a bass-driven groove to show themselves. the other thing is that your flow kind of wobbles when you introduce new tracks. not always, but enough to detract, and that's to do with mixing skill rather than selection -- cuz you nailed that, enough thumpers in here that kept me listening.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. The thing with the levels is probably because for some reason it has been hard to get some decent volume on my headphones while mixing since I changed my setup, so it's hard to judge the actual levels of the tracks. I'll have to fix that.

Also could you elaborate what you mean by 'wobbly' flow?

sure. the transitions from around 15-16min, 20-21min stick in my mind specifically. the incoming track comes in not quite fully matching the one playing, most because of leveling (coming in too quick, or too slow, or inconsistently during transitions). you tend to use filtering techniques really often to introduce new grooves by cutting lows or high, then bring in a drop. but before that drop, while the tracks are blending, the flow sometimes loses direction for a moment or two when the blend isn't as tight as it should be.

you should be more willing cut a track right in with minimal eqing or filtering, cuz you way you pick them they tend to line pretty nicely with each other. you can make it seem like a new percussive or rhythmic phrase was introduced and then -- boom! it becomes a new track. most of the time i could pick out your transitions without really listening all that hard because they tend to happen in the same manner each time.

and about mixing with headphones, two things can help you: (1) listening at either a very very low volume or a very high volume will let you hear problems with levels. if it doesn't sound right, or steady, then you know you have some mastering work to do. (2) listen to it on other systems, like your living room hi-fi, your tv, really shitty headphones, a car. these can help you locate problems. sometimes listening to it on a really nice system or a pair only, without comparison to other systems, will really muddy a mix. this advice only helps if you aren't mixing live - if you are, then you have to take some time to learn the way your headphones represent sound so that you can get all the leveling correct the first time around.
