Question Indonesia

I'm interviewing for a teaching job in the capital of Indonesia. Well, the job is in Indonesia, but I am in California. I'm doing the interview on this new thing called Skype. Anyway, I don't really know anything about Jakarta except that it's the third most polluted city on the planet, and that whoever wrote this article didn't have a very rad time there. I'm also interviewing for Japan and Taiwan, are they chiller countries? Good music scene? Can I enjoy the local women without having to pay them or find out they have a penis? Plz advise.

Right, not to mention their religious handicap. I hope they are not the flagellating kind.

More of the hypocrite kind when it suits some of them to do so. There's a lot better places to go in SE Asia and Indonesia is a corrupt, rancid hole for the most part.

Aren't some corrupt, rancid hellholes pretty cool though? Like Mexico City?

Jeez, I'm sorry to read all of this negative feedback. Bali was one of the destinations on my wish list of places to check out within the next few years. I figured a anyplace that openly sold mushroom shakes couldn't be that bad. Then again, a lot of people are just not street smart / faint at heart.. I read tons of awful feedback about Thailand, but when I spoke to my friends from here, they told me not to be scared off by what I'd read, and that it shouldn't be missed, if I was every traveling through the area.

Bali is quite, quite different from the rest of Indonesia, just so you know. It's the "westernised" part, if you like.

The drug stuff isn't so different, however. If you're caught with drugs in Bali, you'll likely go to prison forever. Other parts of Indonesia, you'll get the death penalty.

Openly selling shroom shakes... lol, no.

A friend of mine from around here (a retired TA) moved out to Singapore a few years ago, after meeting & marrying some hot, wealthy Indonesian chick.
He takes regular weekend trips to Bali, and the first time he posted up pics of a storefront with a huge painted sign which read, "We Have Magic Mushroom Shakes!"
It is incredibly illegal out there, but the police are corrupt & can be fairly easily bribed. They apparently offer tourists mushrooms and marijuana at many of the restaurants out there, when they order food. It is, of course, a great risk both to themselves, and the tourists, as far as the actual law goes. But yeah... corruption.

Ironically, when considering traveling through SE Asia, Bali & Singapore are the only touristy / westernized places on my list. I'd much rather see how people really live, even at my own personal risk. For me, traveling is about learning, not about staying safely within my American bubble wherever I go. Jakarta (as well as other cities) might be really awful to live in, but experiencing such places make you appreciate where you're from, much more. What I'm saying, is that wherever the OP decides to go, she'll probably still gain something in the long run, as long as she makes it out alive. Wait, that came out wrong...

I should probably mention that wherever I end up going, I will be signing a contract that binds me to the city for a year or longer. After reading up a bit about how Taipei is apparently clean, efficient and totally not full of murderers, perhaps I will hold out for a job there. I'm all for slumming my way through a good hellhole (a week traveling through the interior of Bolivia probably takes the cake for me), but Jakarta may be the visiting sort of hellhole, not the 'spend a year of your life there' kind.
