So EDM is mainstream. What comes next?

Social trends and mood swings are something that have always piqued my interest.. watching how social cycles repeat themselves, and then watching the reaction that comes from one mass sensation that triggers another and so on..

It's no secret that EDM is mainstream. Its what top 40 hip hop was 8 years ago, Grunge in the early mid 90's etc. My 13 year old sister blasts David Guetta, 60 year old relatives know who Deadmau5 is...its every where.

So this thread is more a survey as to what you think is the next big thing...

More close to home, we've seen the huge influx of nu disco/slower house jams. These events are no longer underground per se... MLA events are packed with average joe, and music aficionados alike. Id even vouch to say that its on the cusp of entering the mainstream clubs. Its beginning to exhaust itself at the underground level too.

This song caught me off guard the other day. When heavy hitters like Funkagenda are starting to sample these retro/nu disco sounds.. its a sign that its seeping into the mainstream. (personally i love this tune)

So whats next for the underground? and then the mainstream?

This doesnt necessarily have to pertain to EDM.. but im curious what people think.

Personally I see a resurgence of band based acts... sort of how grunge came from the aftermath of bastardized new wave/hair rock, a proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes of dead genres. I picture 6-8 person acts bringing a variety of sounds to the table, horns, violins.. some soul/funk influences with a solid rock band core. Why? because its 'fresh' and a reaction to all the 'formula' electronic stuff out right now.

What are your thoughts???

I've been hearing NuDisco around for a while now. I don't know how much it has changed in the past few years though so I might be unfamiliar with a lot of what is being produced.

In terms of band based acts, I think that might be due to the fact that the technology is more accessible and the ability to perform live is somewhat easier now than when you used to have to lug around 200 pounds of your own equipment. Plus, a band is a pretty standard format in commercial music, it probably also makes acts more accessible to mainstream audiences rather than one person behind a set of CDJs. Just a guess though.

Nothing is next. You continue to listen, and maybe enjoy. You continue to share, and discuss.

Absolutely nothing has changed, except that more people are listening.

In the end it is still music, and there is only one thing to do with music.

PS- Nu Disco sucks.

....I suppose you could take that metaphysical approach.

.....but defining trends do happen.
