DJ setup explained...by AVB

A friend of mine sent me this link. He explains how he syncs his live visuals on the fly with 4 CDJ-2K's, DJM-2K with SMPTE and Fader Start functions.

What do you guys think.

I read about this in DJ Times recently. Seems pretty straightforward.

4 CDJ's, two play music, the other two are triggered by faders up and output SMPTE timecode to control visuals and outboard effects.

Audio-wise, it's a very basic setup.

I've been out of the loop with new DJ tech, but this is a pretty simple and elegant solution. The only downside is that it's also a $4000 solution :P

More like a $10,000 solution!

So why not use Serato VIDEO or Inklen's Mix Emergency? I use Serato Video every weekend it works great! It's basically the same thing as mixing two songs together and you don't need any special equipment.

EDIT...

I just realized that syncing fireworks to Serato is not possible that's probably why he does it this way.

Yes, and he DOES have a VJ on his team. The VJ probably has artistic freedom.

Hmmmm, so a couple of things about this vid.

I find the timing funny, and I feel this is kind of a attempt to mitigate the fallout from Joel's (The Mau5) remarks about how all big dj's (himself included) just press play and let visuals happen automatically.

It seems like a concerted effort by Armin to desperately convince everyone that he's not miming, and I believe he probably does mix live as the steup is straightforward but it just seems a little like he protesteth too much.

One funny moment though happens at 3:31 when Armin says "I don't pre- program my sets" - just look at the glance he gets from his tour manager at that moment. I hope Armin doesn't bring that guy to his poker games lol.

lol

i honestly don't get how people that old find this in any way fun. Especially when you've made your money and could make more money using that money doing something that allows you to have a life and still be a part of the music scene perhaps doing something more rewarding like supporting music or giving back.

HOnestly, i wonder if people like this stay in it either because he is a drug addict or a pederast. I just don't get how someone that old after all this time can find that schedule satisfying.

I would rather run an empire from home and raise 3 mini mes. That sort of touring is just not healthy at that age.
