is was just thinking about how trance has been (in my opinion-thought i may be wrong) on a decline. i'm not basing this on any particular facts, just gut feeling. in any case, i was wondering if anyone knew of any musical movements that that passed and revived?

is there hope for trance? what will it take? should we do anything?

if it is on a decline and it can be revived i want to a part of it. i can say that trance (and ambient ) form to some extent a part of my being.


am i wrong? is trance as popular as ever?

Goa Trance kinda fizzled out, and has seen a revival in the last few years... I also hear that Armada is doing something called Team 138, as a response to some Team 140 that's popping up, which is part of a REALLY recent revival in the more classic styles of epic and anthemic trance.

So, that might be worth looking into.

I definitely am... the 00-07 era of epic trance is the kind of sound I like to make, and a revival of it will make it easier to spread my music to the world

I don't necessarily feel trance is dying, it just doesn't feed off of mainstream success like electro house and dubstep are doing, so it seems abandoned. It's not mainstream, so the new massive waves of people completely ignore it.

I don't think most people are properly introduced to trance, and that is what the main problem is. These days everyone is being brought into dance music with Avicii, SHM, and Skrillex with all of the pop songs that they can sing along with and pretend they're all raging their faces off. They don't even know what trance is, and since they don't know what it is, or the names associated with it, they avoid it.

While mainstream people avoid it, at the same time trance producers are alienating their loyal community by trying to reach out to that mainstream crowd by changing their styles, and it just isn't working on either fronts.

The problem with trance is it is trying to hard to grab a group of people that have already made up their minds. Let them be, and concentrate on what you already have build off of that.

Probably one of the most classic examples of a scene that died and was revived is acid house. It had its glorious birth but, by the mid-90s, acid house was all but dead (ironically enough, it fizzled right out around the same time Phuture finally released a proper full-length album!). For nearly a decade it lay dormant, only the odd throwback track cropping up.

Sometime around 2003-04, it began creeping up again with more regularity (I wonder if Josh Wink's 20 To 20 had anything to do with it). Perhaps it was merely a retro movement at first, but within a couple years acid house - proper classic stuff, that is - had grown quite prominent again. Though it's never quite reached the highs of the 80s, acid house has sustained the momentum from that rebirth, such that I'd say it's found a distinct niche again.

What I'm saying is trance needs to be utterly dead for a while, then have a respected elder dust it off, filling a particular void folks didn't realize was missing until they heard it again. Wait, isn't that what Platipus has been trying to do anyway?

i think there is a future for any genre of music it's just takes the right approach...


1. you need talented new producers that are capable of a lot of quality output with a diverse, but cohesive sound.

I'm talking you need an Oliver Lieb, Ralf Hildenbeutel & Matthias Hoffmann, Simon Berry, Aphex Twin, etc quality producer. These guys were real innovators in their time and they made music because they actually LOVED music, not because they were trying to make money.


2. you need a reliable, quality label to output on.

A label where people can go and reliably find the music that they are in to. Too many labels these days release quantity over quality because they are looking to cash in, but if they put the filter on and build a quality imprint people will start to follow it. Every musical movement has this. Early House music had Trax Records. Early Techno had Metroplex, KMS, Transmat, R&S. Early Trance had Eye Q, Superstition, Platipus. IDM had Warp Records. The progressive scene had Bedrock Records. Even today you have labels like Hot Natured that dominate their niche.


3. You need diversity in sound.

Mentioned briefly above, but the death of any genre is stale, unimaginative productions. what killed trance? Everyone trying too hard to make the next epic breakdown, hands in the air, supersaw track. they are still doing it. that's why what is called trance today is basically a cookie cutter shell of it's former self. It's ok to have commonality in tracks i think that's important to establishing a sound, but it needs to be done in good taste. early forms of genres are always the most experimental in nature and it's usually what draws people to it initially. once things get too samey people get bored and move on to something new. this happened to older genres it will happen to the stuff that's popular now.



i could go on and on of course, but i think i've gotten what i wanted to say across.

I hope you are aware the ones you mentioned probably made more money than many trance producers nowadays do.
If your saying nowadays producers don't love their music and they are just trying to make money I think you're generalizing a bit too much.
The only trance producer I know personally, Lisaya, if he only produced for making money, should have stopped long ago as the counter is over 15 years now.
