Hello!

Hey fellow trance addicts

I've been collecting and listening to trance songs for several years now, and I finally decided to learn how to mix my own songs. As a result, here is my first (half-assed) live set Please download it and tell me what you think. I welcome any feedback about the song choices, mixing, tips, etc.

This mix was done entirely in software, although I used several different applications. My goal was to learn as much as I could about beat mixing and transitions.

Here is the URL for my set:
http://www.rpgnews.com/liveset.html

The file is hosted on a fast HTTP site, so download speeds should not be a problem. It's encoded at 128kbits, and is 50mb big.

Cheers,
Nennon

For a first mix, it's quite okay... I think it was better than my first mix, but anyway, some tips:
You're mixing very different tracks, you gotta take some time to re-arange your tracks in the perfect order to make it smooth.
ie. On the Move is a very progressive track, and you mixed it into Angelfalls which is a mellow track, it doesn't work very well. Same, from Angelfalls to Komodo.
Keep practicing beatmaching.
Good pick on The Free Fall, that's one of my fav. tracks
To get a sense of what I was talking about earlier, with matching of tracks into a smooth order, trying mixing On the Move with Mauro Picotto - Ultramahora Ibiza
it'll work much better than with Angelfalls.
Get rid of the cheese(read: Darude)
Keep the tracks, mixed in longer, use your EQ, keep practicing and you'll get even better

Keep on Working at It

I agree..

Hey.. thanks for your feedback. I agree with the track matching. Some songs don't flow into others, and you're right about the cheesy stuff.

On my next mix, I'll try something different. I already have a good song selection in mind.. It should sound a little better, I think.

Anyway, here's the track list for Set One.

(00:00 - 05:30) Barthezz - On The Move
(05:30 - 09:50) Ayla - Angelfalls
(09:50 - 14:25) Mauro Picotto - Komodo
(14:25 - 20:15) Beam & Yanou - The Free Fall (The Exposition)
(20:15 - 23:35) Mauro Picotto - Ultramahora Ibiza
(23:35 - 27:15) Darude - Feel The Beat
(27:15 - 30:10) Darude - Sandstorm
(30:10 - 31:45) Lucid - I Can't Help Myself
(31:45 - 37:40) Major League - Wonder Where You Are
(37:40 - 43:35) Hybrid - Finished Symphony
(43:35 - 52:23) Guardians of the Earth - One Moon Circling

The beat matching needs alot of work.. In my opinion, I think that this mix would sound alot better if you matched the beats together instead of fading in and out between tracks... The track selection is good but would be alot better in a different order.. Just my opinion, but keep practicing ... What progie did u use??

Well, I'm an idiot.. *Tr@nza* just told me that it's possible to save the stuff you play in Traktor to a .wav file. If I knew that, the mix would be better beat-matched - I ended up using MixMeister for the final .mp3 version, after learning how to beat match in Traktor by playing the whole playlist live a few times.

I'm definitely going to work on my beat matching in the next set, and I'll go with some better (and newer) songs too.

I think Traktor is a great program to learn in.. It shows you all the basics, but has enough options for a pro. The interface is a little confusing at first though. MixMeister is better for making pre-recorded sets though. You have precise control over what happens, and it's timeline based.

I look forward to more feedback.. and JayD, thanks for your comments. I'll learn from my mistakes

Traktor is a DJ mixing application for Windows.. it's pretty cool, has a lot of features.. It's slightly confusing, but the basics are easy to understand.

I can't tell you where to get it, but you should be able to find a thread on the DJ Zone forum related to it.

If you want to learn how to do your own mixing, start with Traktor (to learn beat matching and mixing), then possibly get one of the more advanced (timeline-based) production apps.
