The 10 best trance tracks, according to James Holden

James: “Of course I mean trance: the state of mind, not the sadly misnamed genre. Music like this stretches back beyond the start of history and will be around until a time when glow sticks and middle-aged Dutch men pulling poses are long forgotten. Modern neuroscience has shown that this stuff does indeed have magical effects on the brain and our state of consciousness – if we let it.”

I have no doubts anymore, James Holden is an artfag. "Mind-alterting tracks" lol. As opposed to what? Tracks that don't alter your mind? What a fucking idiot!

quote:

If we let it lol. MORE LIKE IF WE PRETEND IT DOES. Just like, say, homeopathy or astrology or Christianity or whatever has magical effects on your mind if you let it. Get it fagot? Neuroscience has shown lol. Neuroscence has shown, you fucking clueless moran, that EVERY MUSIC HAS AN EFFECT ON THE BRAIN. And even more than that -- that every sound has an effect on the brain! that even fucking silence has an effect on the brain!

Basically, to demolish this "trance" fagotry once and for all, the word "hypnotic" is an euphemism for sleep-inducing a.k.a. boring. This is how talentless fucks such as James Holden try to pass off boring music as something profound in order to sell themselves, to make a living.

In this list, he abandons the same sad genre that made him famous. I LOL at thee, James Holden.

not that I like anything by Holden any more but to his defence:

I don't see how him making this list is him abandoning anything. He "abandoned" "trance" a long long time ago. Calling Horizons and Solstice trance is a stretch anyway.

Are there any club tracks in that list? Could James Holden have any sort of DJ career by playing music from his list?

I'm sorry he just sounds pretentious as fuck.

Depends on the venue I guess, but as stated in the ingress "none of that glow stick-waving stuff". I just don't see the issue here. The title of the article makes you expect something and you don't get it, big deal. Read 3 more sentences of it and it's perfectly fine.

edit; you ninjaedited that post 3 times. I didn't even catch the second question when I clicked quote and wrote my reply.

Oh yeah no doubt he is pretentious, or at least does a great job coming off as it. I'm happy though, if he'd made a list with trance the way we think of it, it would probably be a huge disappointment. It's not like we haven't seen enough lists of top 10 trance tracks over the last 10 years.

quote:
James: “The tempo and pulse of this coincide neatly with alpha-frequency brainwaves – leading to a calming effect on the listener, or possibly increases in whole-brain synchronisation that cause altered states of consciousness, depending how hard (or gently) you listen.”

holy shit

edit; Harmonia - Watussi was excellent (1974!?), and glad I got reminded of that Plastikman-track.
