Releasing a compilation on sites like bandcamp.

It seems so obvious to me that you can't but at the same time i've seen it happening that i feelt forced to write this.

Can you release a compilation ISOS style on bandcamp and ask for money?¿ Beatport allows you to do so legally apparently if you've bought the sounds there. (and i find it odd because you don't have the full rights of the tracks to do so) You'd need to license each track separately or at least is how i think it's done.

So?

beatport allows you to release mixes if you've bought the tracks there, not comps.
the way it works is they pay the respective rightsholders to the individual tracks.

Well a compilation is esentially a dj mix but pressed on a CD and artists receive loyalties while on a podcast only rights associations pay based on airplays.

I still question this, basically i can earn 2,000€ out of a mix and pay only 30€ from the purchased tracks, it simply doesn't feel legal. While on a compilation if i earn 10,000 discounted promotion,cd press maybe i get 5,000 and i've to pay 3,000 on loyalties. Seems fair this way.

You can rest assured Beatport has acquired the appropriate legal licenses/permissions to do so. Unless their terms tell you otherwise. Maybe you should read them.

I am not planning to do it is just that i've seen a lot of people doing it, what beatport dues seems unfair but afterall might be legal now i am hell busy but i'll read the terms.

But if you download music illegally and release a compilation of it... i've seen a pack of 3 2 hour sets released for 10€ or 4€ each.... if only one of the labels sue you... it's 100 tracks from maybe 80 different labels if anyone takes the hassle you are fucked up, some labels are picky if you upload their content youtube, imagine if you profit from it :O

no, you can't at all actually. you clearly have no clue what you're talking about.
a mix sells for $10. you earn $1 from that. the rest goes to beatport and the appropriate rightsholders (ie the tracks you used in your mix)

as some random nobody, you have absolutely no way or authority no to release a compilation or mix on the main beatport store. it's an entirely different platform: http://mixes.beatport.com

please do a little research next time.

As long as the labels get their share they won't mind. If I'm not mistaking licensing an entire podcast episode is cheaper than licensing a single track here in NL, if it's the same in USA or Germany it makes sense for Beatport mixes to be cheap.

Bandcamp is a different story I think. You need to be rightsholder there.

So basically you want to glue other people's work (music) together and get money for yourself?

A DJ in a way "produces" a live show in a live setting with a crew, but like this it's bullshit. Unless you pay the artists what they deserve.

Live, sure.

But a DJ shouldn't get paid for lining up other artists tracks, even if it's just one penny.

They should get paid if they bring in a massive audience like the big dudes are, as that's legitimate promo. Maybe.

you pay 30 for the tracks. then make 2000 on sales. beatport will give money to all the artists, from their own pockets. you don't have to 'front the cash' or anything like that. they're probably ripping you off bigtime, compared to if you did the licensing yourself, but that's not really a viable option anyways, so yah..

It's all legal.
