More likely he's looking for votes from heterosexual voters that refuse to vote for a party that restricts human rights. You're right that he'd be a little foolish to hope for homosexual votes when they've historically shunned the Tories.

well it really works both ways

long term relationship gays are happy - they get legally tied up

less free floating gays... win for people who want less random gay relationships bringing more queers into the fold. (pun) (and STD risks although that was so 10-20 years ago)

hell even HIV has a preventative cure now.

These laws have come in in other English Speaking countries that the UK is orbiting with.

Canada just trumped the civil union stuff, with "divorce" allowance for gay couples. Now they can get married AND break up.


Then there is the whole EU equality factor.
