What's with the DJs that are so anal about technical skills?

I'm more into a solid tracklist, basic smooth transitioning and a nice gig to spice up the crowd or maybe even just my own self pleasure.

but I guess some DJs make a big deal by what software, what equipment, what knowledge and sophistication you have in your technical abilities?

does it really matter though?

I prefer Sagan's explanation for why we exist:

"we are a way for the universe to know itself"

or something like that

I'd be happy to go see a dj that took pride in anything that they did in the booth.

some DJs have been critical of me because I dont mess around with much effects, and I don't use much super advanced techniques when it comes to mixing, fading, and transitioning

I'm mostly into just smooth transitions and getting a bomb ass tracklist but I've been criticized for being a bad DJ because of that.

so is it really a big deal? in the end most people (the masses) dont really pay attention and just want good content right?

Why wouldn't you try and improve your skill set?

what kind of djs are you hanging around? The use of FX for mixing and transitioning is a classic top 40 and maybe a hip hop dj thing. Most electronic music djs stay away from the use of fx during transitions. Its the classic allen heath versus pioneer high end mixer debate. Pioneer is the industry standard bc its preferred by most top 40 djs but most every big name in electronic music prefers the allen heath bc of the fact that they could give a shit for all the fx and just want that 4th filter that will allow smother mixing of two dance tracks.

Sasha, digweed, and pvd who are as big of 3 djs as you can find used to use almost no fx in their entire dj sets during the vinyl days. what all three would do is rework the tracks they though needed slight tweaks, and repress vinyls for them. Heck during the twilo days both sasha and digweed were known for playing a track then coming out of the booth and on the dance floor so they could hear those tracks booming out of that phazon sound system. as long as the mix is good, let the tracks speak for themselves.
