Hey guys, I'm looking to get into Djing as a hobby more or less since I listen to 3-4 hours of music a day it will give me a more productive way to waste my time.

Any books, videos, tutorials, or advice you could give me would be great. Whats a good starting point to look at as far as equipment, software etc. I would like it to still be challenging and advanced so as I become better I can use the full capabilities of a system then rather learning a new software etc.

Take a look at David.michaels blog a few threads down from here. He has some good beginners stuff on there and good guide for Dj controllers. These days you can pick up an inexpensive controller, link it to your laptop, and try it out for yourself before investing huge bucks.

That said, when I started in 06-07, I had been using virtual Dj and a mouse for a few years before that mixing tracks, learning phrasing and eqing. I finally took the plunge in 2006-7 and purchased a then brand new pioneer Djm 400 and 2 cdj 800mk2. Although I've since updated the mixer, the basic skills you learn remain the same. It wasnt cheap, but I know I can walk into any setup with two decks and a mixer and go from there, without a laptop.

Awesome thanks a lot man. Would you say its worth is to deal with just a mouse and skip out on an entry level controller and wait till I'm use to the set up and then get a medium/premium controller?

Thats what I did for a while till I decided I wanted to invest in a controller got the M-audio xponent which was pretty top of the line back in the day when they were only a few out there. I upgraded to the pioneer DDJ-T1 and I use that now. I also had a DJM-600 and some CDJ 800's for a while before I got the T1 but I got bored with them.

Considering how inexpensive entry level controllers are these days (under 250 if you really don't want to spend much), you might consider just starting with that and see how you like it. Try not to rely on the auto beatmatch though. For a beginner, I think it's important to try to learn that without that crutch. Once you learn beatmatching, then you can work on eqing, which will be a lot easier on a basic controller than with a mouse. I only started that way because back in the mid 2000s there weren't really any cheap intro controllers in existence!
