So, Music Radar has been scouring newb threads on music production forums to bring us a list of the same free plugins that anybody with a pulse has already known about for the last 6 years? There you go kids - the way to make money in this business isn't by producing trance, it's by exploiting clueless advertisers with your 10th grade-level journalism skills. |
If they catered the list to your specific target market (serious music producers with a millenium worth of production experience ) they will simultaneously neglect the largest segment of producers.
Even for someone like myself, who's been producing more than 10 years, I still do it merely as a hobby. Like most people who produce. So I found some value in that list.
Also, if you type in "best free plugins", they currently rank #1 for that phrase. Which returns 55 million results. They're even outranking all the sites for the best free wordpress plugins, which is a competitive market all by itself.
So that tells me, regardless of their journalism skills, their business model definitely works. They know exactly what google considers "relevant" for their market. They know what the larger % of the market demands. They are appealing to newbies, and you hate it, but thats life.
Most importantly, if you don't like it, noones stopping you from making your own list.. targeted to veteran music producers only.
You can even take it a step further, and pay someone to rank your page right above theirs.
The problem is, the minute you stop SEO, your rank will drop, and their page will NATURALLY outrank yours. Why? Because more newbies are sharing their list and bookmarking it, rather than yours, who only veterans see the value in.
So again, this is not a problem with their journalism skills. Its a conflict of interest that exists in every niche, every market, every successful business in the world. And if you're in this niche to make money, you either commercialize certain aspects of your business model, or go broke.
ps. I have no idea what you mean by "exploiting advertisers". Those advertisers PAY for the traffic that site delivers them. And if their traffic doesn't convert, guess what? They stop paying!
pss. Here is something most people never mention. Your advertisers will often do BETTER if your content isn't perfect. Because people will click on the page, they won't be that interested in the content, and will click over to the ads. I'm not saying put out content that sucks, but there is definitely a delicate balance you need to reach if your site is monetized mainly with ads.
