I am not surprised in the least bit. Ammonium Nitrate fertilizers are an extremely powerful explosive, and the process in making it involves fairly explosive chemicals as well.

ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) explosives are a very commonly used industrial explosive used in the mining industry, and because of its ease of acquisition it is a choice explosive for terrorists. The OKC bombing, the first WTC attack, and a number of other high profile bombings were all ANFO bombs.

Basically don't fuck with the stuff. It likes to explode big. If I knew I was near a fertilizer plant that was on fire I'd be going the fuck the other way as fast as possible.
