Pharmacists

I really don't understamd why many pharmacists make 6 figures in America. It seems that with the computerization of medical records and vast databases of drug interactions, that this job could be done by someone with a little bit of training, rather than someone with a masters or doctorate. I could be completely wrong but I would think the onus of not prescribing medication that interact with current meds should be the doctor's responsibility. I'm a bit irritated that it just took Rite Aid 5 hours to fill my klonopin perscription when they said it would be 30 minutes. Anyone else think some kind of machine could count out 90 pills and put them in a bottle?

Side effects, drug interactions, etc. are not absolute. And doctors can't possibly be expected to know all of what pharmacists know, granted they have to know enough to prescribe safely.... but you'd actually be surprised by what doctors DON'T know. There is a reason health care teams are comprised of multidisciplinary roles.

But simple google searches can find interactions and side effects. I just feel like a computer could handle that profession.

Who did you deal with? There's three levels of pharmacists working. Pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants, and pharmacists. One has a certification, one is working towards the degree and one has the degree.

You're missing the point. A google search or database can never account for the exceptions, or for the way drugs will affect each individual combined with their unique comorbidites, etc. Again, intended effects, side effects, adverse effects, etc. are not absolute.

Did someone say benzos?

I think my friend ruined his life with those. Need to be really careful with controlled substances.

Yeah but this statement collapses when you weigh in whom has authority over the other. Clearly the doctor, bounded by whichever law he is subject to, precedes in command to any petty pharmacist.

The pharmacist delivers the product sold by a conglomerate and distributed and produced by XYZ. As a pharmacist you are no more than a fancy car salesman. You can't prescribe, and you can't treat patients.

You can sort, but anyone can sort...Russell is right. But Russell also fails to acknowledge that six figures in the US is still not that much....sorry to burst your bubble.

True, but that still doesn't mean the doctor can work in isolation. A database or robot simply can never replace a pharmacist, imo. A pharmacy tech maybe.

By your logic Mr. Russell we don't need as many doctors either because idiots could Google and webmd all their symptoms and come to ridiculous conclusions.

Wait... lots of people already do that.
