Converting between video formats

I would have posted this in the "How to..." section, but I don't think very many ppl look there. Here goes:

Does anyone know how to make a *.avi into a format playable in a dvd player? What format would I use? What program? I need all the info I can get please.

Thanks in advance.

Some DVD-players support the DivX format, but they might not correctly work with all the versions... The most popular format for playing on dvd-players is SVCD... the quality is as good as DivX, but it takes more (read - much more) place - a 1.5 hour movie can take 3 CDs. Converting between these formats is also quite a nuisansa, because SVCD is mpeg2 (i'm not quite sure here), divx is divx, divx is converted from vobs, which are also mpeg2. So basically what you'll have to do is to reverse the conversion... I don't even imagine how that could be done without significant quality loss by a non-prof. Sure thing it IS possible, but believe me - you don't wanna do that by yourself... Just get the movie/vid in SVCD format and burn it. If you want more info on that go to http://www.vcdhelp.com/ - they have quite good tutorials there... read, read, read again...

There's a few ways you can do this:

1. Convert the DivX file to MPEG-1 format and burn that as a Video CD onto 2 or more CDs (depends on how long the movie is. A CD can hold up to between 72 (74 min CD) and 79 minutes (80 min CD) of VCD footage). The quality is VHS-quality. :-(

2. Convert the DivX file to MPEG-2 format and burn that as either a SVCD (a CD can hold between 35 and 50 minutes of footage because it uses VBR for encoding (these SVCD discs do NOT play in most DVD players that are NOT for the Asian market). You need at least 3-5 CDs for a full-length movie) OR use a DVD authoring program and burn it to DVD-R with a DVD burner to play in MOST DVD players. The quality is pretty much identical to the original DivX file.

You can check out http://www.vcdhelp.com/ to help you with the converting and authoring for all 3 formats.

I hope that this helped you out.

THANKS!

If you're REALLY interested in PROFESSIONAL DVD Authoring, a friend of mine named Dean (he works in the industry) gave me 2 sites:

http://www.daikindvd.com/ and
http://www.sonic.com/

Daikin DVD was aqquired by Sonic Solutions on 2001-02-28 so, just go to the 2nd site. Look for their software. There's something for everyone: from the amatuer home movie maker to the professional Hollywood movie studios.

It has a lot to do with the DVD player you have too... if you have an older dvd player it won't work reguardless of what you do... the newer players work good with make shift DVD's... I put alot of my Indie, and documentary films on DVD and they don't play in some peoples dvd players..... it's hit or miss which pisses me off.... I think for me I might just have to get a DVD Burner and fuck all the go between!!!!!!!!
