Paul Ended around 4. Technical difficulties in the beginning held him back from starting at the 12:30 time.
Was there the entire night and had to setup for the basement. Each room filled up appropriately like the old days, doors for the main-room opened a little after 10:45. What was really shocking to me, was I had the 11-11:45 slot in the basement, and the entire room was packed full of people. Went upstairs, and the main entrance (hip hop) room was half full, upstairs I didnt get a chance to see.
Some of the major plus's I have seen for 1015 are as follows:
Expecting that my ears would be ringing after this event, I found some earplugs and had them in for half the night, the reminder of the night was without. Amazingly, sound has greatly improved with the new "stormtrooper" setup they have in the main-room. The mainroom booth changed slightly, with the removal of the old record/vinyl bins, and in place 1 big sub for the booth giving it some kind of balance. glancing over at the ampracks, I see major improvements in the overall sound in the main as well as little improvements to 1015s additional rooms. (however, the only thing I did the most change in, was the main-room)
The lighting rig, lasers and everything seemed to be working last night. One of the biggest attractions to 1015's mainroom was the astroscan, a triangular shaped light device that came out of the discoball at various times of the night and worked like a beacon/siren. It was nice to see that working. I have not seen that working since the Spundae days at 1015.The big white screens your acustom to on each side of the mainroom are gone, and there are screens on the back wall.
Most of the techs that they hired on after 1015's main tech, Marie departed...
I am pleased to see that the owner has hired someone in place that actually cares, doesn't smoke and take unneeded breaks while he is working. The entire night, the tech stayed in the booth, which i was really, shocked to see. Everything was under control and he really did a great job of managing the mainroom. For the first time ever, I attended as a Dj and Patron, something I haven't done in many years.
Jon, the crowd was 50-50. Mainroom was full of white guys, mixed in with the older generation asians and some newcomers I never seen before, and some returning patrons I have not seen at 1015 in a very long time. Ratio last night was maybe 2girls for every guy there, which is uncommon, the last time PVD was at 1015, more men were in the crowd than women. It was nice to see a mixed bag this time too, not just asians, whites or blacks. but mixed.
There are alot of things different with the club now than when we had it. I feel it could have been a little darker, just a little too bright in some areas of the night. But its nice to see 99% of the things working in the club so kinda on the fence with it.
There are always thugs somewhere in the club, they are everywhere. you just probably havent noticed them at other venues. 1015s crowd. those guys stayed int he corner by the bar. (when we were there) maybe they flocked out a bit and in the club last night cause they havent been back for so long.
Honestly, I have seen PVD events more packed than last night. I could be wrong tho. Not sure since I didnt hear what the final numbers were for last night. I can remember peoples faces being plastered to the plexiglass when we raised it to protect Djs before. I felt there was actually room to move about in the main which was kinda uncommon since it was Paul. We did raise it in the middle of the night, and some of the newcomers were not expecting it. Loved the WTF look on their faces.
Overall, Im still one of PVD's biggest fans. Why? Because his innovativeness behind the decks and what he does. He does not simply take a track throw it into ableton and mix into another. What I saw him do last night was pretty amazing. Taking a little bit of a track, turning it into something entirely new, playing something live to it, adding version of tracks from his albums then saying "HERE" and deploying it out to the crowd. He has gotten better at it over the years. Just crazy at how fast he does it...
