Getting recognized?

How the hell is someone supposed to get recognized today? I understand it takes time and effort, but that's pretty much all I know. I make music, I put it up in places, I'm pretty active, and I participate. What else is there? I can't DJ my shit (not that I would want to), and I can't make super mainstream shit (because it's against my morals and standards). Do I have to do either of those?

Also, I don't want to mess with beatport right now. It seems stupid.

I realise that this is entirely subjective, but is your music good?

Right now, in time, doesn't differ much from any other point in time - Good musicians will make good music, shit musicians will make shit music. I fall into the latter category, and gave up producing a long time ago

What has made it really tough, especially for electronic music producers, is the accessibility of the tools you need to make music. In the 90s (perhaps the peak of electronic music) you had to be pretty dedicated. Drop a couple of grand $$$ minimum on some decent gear, and learn to use it all.

Powerful computers, and more importantly, powerful software that can be easily pirated, changed all that. Anyone can have a go at it now, you don't need the money, just a good computer.

There's still loads of good music being created, it just takes waaaaay longer to sift through it all, so it's more difficult to get "recognized" as you put it.

Lots of other bits and pieces to add to it all... it's a huge scene now.

Long post, lol. Not even sorry that I've been drinking

Marketing. Always marketing.

If you want to get noticed, hire an agent to drum up fake hype for your stuff. Yes, I'm totally serious about this.

If you'd prefer keepin' it realz, y0', then maybe you'll be lucky enough to get noticed by some blogger or webforum. Getting signed and promoted by a label certainly helps though (again, marketing).

You're right, I guess, and you probably answered his question better than my rant.

It just makes me sad that you're right

I do think my music isn't as bad as others, but I honestly don't know what everyone wants so it's kind of hard to make music that sounds good for everyone.

I guess, but where do I find an agent and where do I upload it so it has a better chance of getting noticed by a blogger or webforum?

Those are questions probably better answered by the denizens of the Producers Sub-Forum here.

Linky.

I really don't mean to discourage you at all, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

Make music that YOU like, or you're going to end up hating producing music, in general.

Oh no, yeah. I do make music I like. It's just making the music I like that other people will like as well is just hard. You're right though, if I just stop worrying about people liking my music and getting recognized, then I'll start enjoying it more than I do.

Also, not to discourage you even further but making electronic music is so popular right now that it becomes a working man's hobby for the love of his art. Think locally before thinking globally. But I really don't know much about the marketing part.

I'm not in the financial position in which I can buy the equipment in order to do so. I asked my DJ friends to play my stuff around, but they won't.
